Overheating

My 98 intrigue w/ 109k overheated while sitting through a couple of lights yesterday. I took my car to a shop and they told me I have a coolent leak caused by faulty gaskets that the intrigue is notorious for. I have read through this forum and haven't found gasket replacement to be an wide spread problem. I was quoted $1,100 for 2 gaskets, thermastat, coolent flush and refill, and labor.

I told them to do nothing, and I was thinking of just replacing the cap on the coolent, I read somewhere the caps can go bad and just replacing them will keep the air out.

Can someone tell me what they think about me trying a couple inexpensive fix its before I break down and have a shop do this kind of work. Also is 1,100 excessive for this work?

Thanks, Brad

1100 is too much!!! dont pay that unless that is your last resort. What color is your radiator water? If it looks rusty then I would say try flushing it yourself. that would be the main problem. Then if it still overheats which it shouldnt unless you do have a leak then try your idea with replacing the cap. I never heard of that though. good luck though.
