Can this be done by consumer or do I need a special tool? I'm sick of waiting for my dealer to get a replacement FOB, they lost the original and sold me the new car without, promising to send a new one when it came. 6 months, no FOB. Got a new one on eBay just need it programmed. I'll buy a beer for the first good answer
Have a great day!

It can be done by both.

The quick self to do method is shown below, for the full method using a High Scan Unit (only at the dealership) see this link (http://www.hmaservice.com/webtech/iindex.asp?id=394887164#_394887164 ).

Transmitter Code Registration (using code saving switch)

Note the ETACS unit is in located in the drivers side under the steering wheel. Behind the Passenger Compartment Fuse box.

That took me twenty seconds to do. I'd say I love you but then someone would think it was weird and sully the entire feeling of the moment, so HI FIVES! instead! Thanks so much.... had called my dealer and he wanted 35$ to do this assuming I drove all the way there and back. (twenty second fix cost him a customer)
Thanks again!
p.s. where do I send the beer?

Thats okay I'm all beered out from the weekend. Luckly I saw the post, I had lost my link to the forum and could not get back until I got an email that a posting was made, so I followed it and it lead me back to the forum.

I've been busy doing all kinds of modifications and just completed adding a alarm chirp to the pre-2004 models. You can visit my website and look at the mod page. You might find something that you want to do to the Santa Fe and did not know how to do it.

Well, I got the one remote to work... now can't get the second to work. Using the switch, I am able to program one or the other but not both. ideas?
I leave switch off, push buttons on both. Only the last one pushed works.
I leave off, push both at same time. neither works.
I leave off, push one and set. Remove it from area and do second same way. Now the first won't work after.
Can set one or the other every time, but would like both working....

Hmmm it should work. Okay lets see. make sure you do not disconnect the battery.
1-Remove Ignition key from ignition switch.
2-Set the switch on the ETACS from "Off" to "Set"
3-Press the transmitters' door lock button for one second (this sends the codes to the ETACS and stores it.)
4-Do the same with the other transmitter (Press door lock buttonfor one second)
5-Set the ETACS switch from "Set" to "Off"

See if both remotes work. It should mine does and I did it this way.

Well, between the two of us I got it going. On my particular remotes, the light will blink twice if i hold the button down long enuf. about 2-3 seconds and then they worked as a matched pair.
Thanks for all the help.
I am a new Santa Fe owner and so far very much enjoy the vehicle.

Glad that you got it working. Trust me, after a few years you will still feel the same way. I do.

Is it possible to program 3 remotes? If so how? Do you need the dealer to do it?

That I know of, only two FOBs (remotes) can be programmed regardless if its the dealership/service dept or by yourself.

Just bought a 1 yr old Santa Fe, needed a second remote, took a chance on an ebay purchase, found this thread on reprogramming the keyless entry, and bingo! I'm in business! Thanks a bunch! - Bill

I had a similar problem - bought my 2001 used (1 owner) a year ago but the dealer only had 1 remote. He promised me he could get me a second one for my wife because they also had a Hyundai dealership in town. Months go by and nothing. I call and they can't remember making that promise. Of course, I didn't have him right it down on the sales invoice (lesson learned.) So I found this forum, found a used one on eBay for $5 - followed the programming instructions as seen above, and voíla - problem solved!

I too initially had trouble getting both remotes to take and work. But discovered that I needed to hold down the button a little longer and pause a little longer between pushing the buttons.

And I could be mistaken, but I thought I read somewhere that you could program up to 4 different remote codes with the receiver?

And I could be mistaken, but I thought I read somewhere that you could program up to 4 different remote codes with the receiver?I wished. Throughout numerous online forums as well as talking to the guys directly at Hyundai, it seems that you can only program two FOBs to the ETACS. I wish it were possible though.

Also on some older models like pre-2003 June i belive Santa Fes only came with the two button remote/FOB. Soon after they came with the three button remote. One can get the three button remote and do the above steps and it will work, but the third button would not work for some reason. At least on the ones I tried.

This looks pretty simple but do you know if the 2004 Santa Fe can be programmed by the owner? I've looked under the panel by the fuse box and can't find a module that looks like this.

If I am not mistaken the 2002-2005 have not changed that much in reference to the units location. Now I could be wrong cause I do not have a 2004-5, I have a 2002. Maybe one of the resident Hyundai techs can confirm this.

At first i was so happy to see this posts.
My Sante 2003 has already installed ETACS. The problem is my remote got damaged and I brought a new one. Now my problem is I am unable to get the rmeote programmed. Please note that I got only one remote. I followed the steps mentioned here and even then the key is not getting programmed.
Can anyone tell me where I am going wrong...
OR shall I change the ETACS with a new one?????

Please HELP Me....

Thanks a lot...

Found this thread and bought a new key fob for our 08 Santa Fe on ebay. The wife got the only one that came with it. Now I'm not much of a car mechanic, but I got down the the ETACS behind the fuse box and it doesn't have any switches on it. Even unplugged and removed the box to be sure. Nothing. I'm thinking that it's my cue to go visit a dealer. Anybody know something I don't?

Hello,
I have an 03 Santa Fe, found the set/off switch right where it should be behind the fuses.

I have tried these instructions too many times now and wondering if anyone has any other suggestions.

My one original remote continues to work. The replacement I purchased does not. It has a good battery and I verified that it is the correct replacement but still wont do anything.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

I have a 2004 Hyundai Santa Fe and I am also having the same problem. It is so fustrating. The dealer charges $127 plus programming ($45 or $90 per hour) so assuming it's $90 per hour I could be paying about $230. Just for laughs and giggles I Priced out the cost of a remote starter which would come with 2 remotes that would unlock the doors. It's $321 with tax, complete. I'd do that before I'd pay that much for a remote.

Hyundai is a rip off with the remotes.

I just now programmed my two 3 button remotes following the TWOSPRITS's instructions on my 2003 SFe. Took all of 10 minutes, most of which was finding the 'OFF-SET" switch.
Both work just fine. Many thanks to 2-spirits
