removing parking brake

Just wondering if there is an easy way to remove the parking brake cable from the rear caliper on my 90 Lumina 3.1. My Chilton manual talks about releasing the tension on the cable back under the drivers door. I've tried that without any success. I can't see exactly where I'm supposed to slack off. Is it possible to do without releasing tension. Any help would be muchly appreciated.

Pop the wire assist spring off of the bracket. Pry up on the brake lever to loop the cable, then grab the cable end barrel with a pliers and work it off the lever. If it has an eye on the end of the cable, just pop it off. To get the cable out of the bracket, push the 3 retainer tabs in so they will clear the hole. It helps to have the caliper off so you can break the cable loose so it spins in the bracket first, then hold the cable crooked in the bracket, release the lowest tab, rotate it to get the second close and release it, then the same for the third. There is a tool that will make this easier, but it won't work for the eyelet.

Thanks for the pointers. Actually I got it yesterday,although the steps you describe are pretty much the way I ended up getting it. The only thing I did differently was the way I got the cable out of the bracket. I used a short piece of 1/2" copper tubing. I honed the inside out a little bit, enough to get over the cable, and it pretty much popped right out.
