My 94 ranger is leaking antifreeze, I was told that the freeze plugs are bad, and would have to take heads off to get to them. Does anyone know where they are located and how many plugs are on the engine, it is a 1994 ranger 3.0 six cyl. There is no problem with heater core. Will I have to take engine out or heads off. Thanks

freeze plugs are on the sides of motors and look like a large inverted bottle cap tapped into a hole in the block.they can be difficult to remove and install without raising the motor due to needing to pound them in with a hammer.

I have a 93 ford ranger with basically the same question. I have seen at least two of them on the side of the engine and are starting to leak. How many are there? I have the 4.0L V6. Are there a total of 6 or?

I called Ford to get a price on replacements and they said there was varies freeze plugs available for that engine. Made it sound as if there were different freeze plus located at different spots in the engine. Is this correct information?

What is the procedure for getting them out? I looked in my chilton's manual under freeze plugs but came up with nothing. ANy better resources out there to use? Any information would be helpful.

Ford quoted about $32 a plug just for labor.. that sound about right? I typically do all my own work but it its going to require lifting the motor maybe its a good idea to just let them do it... any opinions?

i would recomend having a reputable mechanic replace the frezze plugs.$32 labor per plug isn't bad

Turns out $32 a plug was a bad quote given by one the service guys there that didn;t have a clue what a freeze plug was... turns out its closer to $500 to change them all and they need to pull the engine to do it.

That concerns me since the tranny has just about 200k on it and still no issues but seems to be common with that many miles after you change the fluid the tranny goes. I guess they could save the fluid but still...

I will try to change at least the plugs I can see and get to that are rusting through. Hopefully I can find a good way to get them out.
