starting problems

i have a 95 ram b2500 conversion van and when i try to start it up for the first time in the morning, it seems dead, it clicks and drags, then it turns over faster each time i turn the key, then it suddenly starts up and doesnt do that until it sits for a while, for the rest of the day, its starts normally, it takes about 8 turns of the key to get it started, is it the battery, the starter, or has it done the ultimate and jumped time....someone help me also i have a lil black smoke comin outta the tail pipe....cracked head? or tune up needed? :banghead:

tune-up, combustion service (clean the intake and throttle body!) carb cleaner. check Throttle position sensor and Idle Air Control valve (IAC).

The IAC is famous for hard or no starting. Check your SMEC (computer) codes, it may turn up as bad.

thanks for the info, one more question, where is the connector to the computer to attach a code reader, they are usually under the dash but i cant find it in my van, is there one?

I'm not certain on the '97.
Common places in the vans:
next to the battery underhood
In the glove box
on the left side of the driver's footwell
on the right side footwell

But those are places I've seen them, could be anywhere but it'll stick out like a sore thumb when you find it.

You don't need a code reader.
just turn your ignition on-off-on-off-on and leave on. Your codes will blink the engine light. The codes and definitions are on the web, or in the service manuals or find them at alldata.com some of the lists may be for other chrysler cars and trucks, but they're all the same codes, just some you won't ever see on your van (if you do, then your computer's spent!)

Looking back at your original post, your starter, battery or battery cables could be a problem, from overuse because the Van's hard to start. try a fresh battery and see if that speeds up the cranking for you, but it's probably the starter that's slowed down. Fix the cold start engine trouble and the starter/battery/cables and you should be smilin'. :)

hey thanks for the info, but how do i read the codes when it blinks, and does anyone know where the hook up is in this van to attach a codereader to it, its not under the dash where it usually is in other cars thank you again

For sure, just count the stupid codes. Don't spend all kinds of money on a code reader...

so what did the problem turn out to be ?, as it seems like my van may have the same or a similar problem.

was it some type of ignition relay or injector solinoid problem ?, any help or replies would be appreciated, thanks.
