My friend has a 2002 wrx. He has intake and full catback exhaust and manual boost cont. He just got this thing that plugs in and redoes the ecu. he says it goes fine up to 2500rpm and then after that its like hitting a brick wall. any reasons y? bad a/f mix maybe?

Well, we'd have to know more about it before we could give a decent answer

My 1st thought would be to unplug it

Sounds like he didn't get the right a/f map uploaded to his ecu. I'd have him take it off and either send it to a tuner for a reflash or redo it himself depending on the part. On some aftermarket ecus you shouldn't use a boost controller because of the way the ecu is faking the readings.

Just buy a UTEC from TurboXS or ECU from Vishnu or Cobb Tuning.

What product did he get? It sounds like any time he's in closed loop fueling that something isn't right. At WOT does it still act the same?

Also it could be that the ECU add-on is killing boost. It's preventing it from building boost somehow, although there is no way that's an intentional design.

If he has a Unichip, tell him to get rid of it. Those things can be dangerous; they're almost never tuned right and bypass the stock ECU's control over timing. If he has a Unichip on his car and it's pushing timing and the ECU hears knock, the Unichip will prevent it from pulling timing like it's supposed to.
