I have a similar knocking noise when I turn left. It also knocks when I go straight (after the left turn). What is this noise? My mechanic can't find it.

It could be from the sway bar bushings.

It's a 1994 Rodeo automatic. The knocking noise is almost in sync with the rotation of the wheel and comes from the RIGHT passenger side. If I press on the accelerator, I hear the knocking. If I let my foot off, it stops.

4X4? If so a bad CV would cause this.

and you're probably right. Since there's a noise on the left turn it appears to be the right joint/boot. This site's advice is to replace the entire axle.

Now I'm told that it can't be the CV joint bcse the noise wouldn't come from the rear. Oh, well...

You never said it was coming from the rear, that makes a big difference.

Axle bearings, something in the rear diff maybe.

The mechanic said it was everything in the rear: bearings, pin, shims, side gear, etc. Says it'll be about $1600.

Anything else I should have them check while I'm there (eg timing belts) at 85k miles?

i was looking up under my back a while a go & i noticed that my 1995.5 rodeo has rubber mounts which are almost rotten. when i turn there's a sound & a feel from the back i'm pretty sure thisis the cause of the sounds. the leaf springs has rubber mounts (on both ends). Now unless u have a whine-ing noise in the wheel(s) that is a indication of a bad bearing(s). the next time you oil up or have the car greased, they are supposed to grease all the wheels or bearings too. so when u have a 10 point or a 16 point <whatever> grease up make sure they do the bearings as well.
