Believe it or not, the 5 GT Turbo was devised as a publicity tool, to help show off Renault's success with 1000bhp turbo motors in Formula One Racing. The original production Phase One 5 GT Turbo was launched in late 1985, using a 115bhp turbocharged version of the long in the tooth 1397cc pushrod engine. Instantly recognised as a tuneable classic, the GT Turbo launched an entire tuning industry - ask Prima Racing and GT Tuning. The Phase Two cars were launched in 1987, complete with minor engine mods (better coolant plumbing and relocated ECU) colour-coded bodykits and proper interior centre console with nicer cloth seats. Four years of unchanged production later, the 5 GT Turbo finally died in 1991 on a J-plate, although rumour has it there are 5 or 6 K-platers out there with the replacement in the form of the Clio 16v and the Clio Williams.

There's two versions of the Renault 5 GT Turbo - the Phase One and the Phase Two, both come with a 1397 cc pushrod motor, running off a single carburettor. It uses a baby Garrett T2 turbo to push out 11 psi of boost and just on 115bhp, which was slightly upped to 120bhp on the later Phase Two cars.

Engine Size 1397cc
Valves 8
Cylinders 4
0-60mph 7.3 s
Max Speed 122mph
Insurance Group 14
BHP 115/120bhp

Phase one is better. I think that 115hp would be scary in an R5. But fun.

The R5 Turbos should've been sold in the states. My dad's Omni GLH could've used a hot hatch competitor that stood a slim chance of showing it up.

Not that a GLH-S has anything to fear from the R5. Still, awesome car.

hate to be nitpicking but the Phase 1 model was simply known as the "5 Turbo" (or Turbo 2 for the mid-engined RWD)

"GT" was added to Phase 2

...also there was the "Renault Le Car Turbo" !!!! which was the USA-only version (someone know more about the specs/numbers sold etc of this version?)

(damn....now I cant post smilies either!)

forgot to mention...... second pic is of the trully wicked 5 Turbo 2 which like I said had RWD and the engine behind the front seats (yes, a 2-seater!).....notice the intakes at the back? they're not just for show like in your ordinary FRONT-ENGINED Hyundai traffic-light racer..... output was about 160 HP production-spec but increased to the hundreds for the race/rally cars (depending on type of racing).. or the tuners naturally... all in all it was a totally different engineered machine than normal Turbo's.....many successes too in competition form all over Europe... extremely rare and collectable I've only spotted it once... in London off-centre...at night parked in a dark alley...

My grand father have got one R5 GTT it's really a great car. The engine is one old 1.4 developping 60ph without turbo called "Cleon" made in cast iron. But with this turbo...
