Bought a 98 Avalon - ran smooth for the last 2 years.... about a month ago a humming noise has started everytime I approached 50 mph. The humming gets louder as I go from 45 to 50... trails down after 50 and goes off after 55 mph.
Got the alignment checked... the guy at the auto shop said you would need to replace struts (its on 81K).... any one's had any similar experiences?
Appreciate your inputs.

My '99 Camry did that after the struts in the front first went bad, and then the cases cracked on them, so now I have this annoying rattling sound over every little crack I hit in the streets. I do agree and I think you should get them replaced. I still need to get on the ball and get mine done.

I just got VA inspection with Bad Struts f/r and the inspector said this is not a safety issue more of a performance handling. I replaced the fronts first and am saving to replace the rear. GO somewhere else besides the dealer to get this replaced. Merchant offers life time guarantee on the struts.

Struts are bad if they leak. Check your tires. Check the brake rotors too.

I haven't ever heard of worn struts "humming" and I can't think of a reason that a constant hum would come from them when driving. I'd come closer to thinking that you just have noisy tires, or a sticking brake pad. Remember--the shops are going to sell you struts whether they're "bad" or not. They're going to be worn at 80,000 miles, but not necessarily "bad". Before throwing $800 on struts, make sure its not something cheaper.
