Tranny swap

Nova 69

I have a Saginaw 4-speed in my 69 Nova right now and I'd like to swap it
out for 5-speed out of a newer Camaro/Iroc. Has any of you tried this?
I've seen kits to change them over to a 6 speed but I haven't heard of
anyone putting in a newer 5-speed.

You should really look at the new Tremec TKO 500 & 600 5-Speeds, great tranny and they can handle 500 torque or 600 torque. Great 5th gear ratio too (.64 5th or .68 5th)

Below I have put in installation notes for you to look at. Hope it helps you out with your decision.

INSTALLATION NOTES FOR TREMEC 5-SPEED, NOVA:

Parts:
You will need to use a C6 slip yoke (31 spline) to match up with the Tremec’s output shaft. We can provide you with the correct yoke.
You will need a 26 spline clutch disc to match up with the Tremec’s 26 spline, 1 1/8” input shaft. Replacing your clutch disc, pressure plate, throw out bearing, and pilot bearing when installing your new transmission is advised but not required.
You will need the proper electrical or mechanical speedometer adapter in order to hook up your speedometer.
You will need 3 quarts of GM Syncromesh transmission fluid.
Here are other parts that you may want or need to help you complete your transmission swap.
Tremec 2” offset shifter (made by Hurst)
Hurst shifter bar
"5-speed" shift ball
Clutch disc, pressure plate, TO bearing
Flywheel, bellhousing, clutch fork
and more
Modifications:

If you currently have an automatic transmission:
You will need to cut an opening in your tunnel to accommodate your new manual shifter and handle.
You will most likely need to “lift” your tunnel to accommodate the larger Tremec.
Note: Do not lower the tail shaft in an attempt to make the transmission fit – this will create an inappropriate driveshaft angle!
You will need a new bell housing, clutch fork, linkage, pedal assemblies, clutch disc, pressure plate, throw out bearing, and pilot bearing.
We can provide you with, or help you locate these parts.
If you currently have a manual transmission it is possible that you will need to “lift” the tunnel to achieve proper fitment. Note: Do not lower the tail shaft in an attempt to make the transmission fit – this will create an inappropriate driveshaft angle! It is also likely that you will have to enlarge your shifter opening to accommodate the Tremec shifter.
You will need to modify your driveshaft. Typically this involves shortening your existing driveshaft by approximately 2”. An alternative is to have a custom unit made by your local driveshaft shop.
It is likely that you will need to modify your existing cross member so that it lines up with the transmission’s mounting holes. This typically involves relocating the cross member-to transmission mounting point approximately 2” rearward.
The standard shifter that comes with the new TKO can be used. It needs to be set at the 16.75", centered position to align properly with your stock console.

I just finished installing a Tremec TKO-I in my '70 Nova. The car origianally had a Muncie M-21 so all the pedals, linkage, etc were already there. The only 'hurdle' I had was having to 'lift' the trans tunnel. I "opened" the tunnel and re-installed some heavy guage sheet metal to seal the opening. Not a major job, just take your time. I would suggest that you purchase your Tremec as a "kit" from one of the many vendors. I purchased my from Mike Forte (http://www.fortesparts.com/tremec.cfm) and was very pleased with the customer service.
