engine stops on idle

I have a 93 century 3.3V6 engine. Have just replaced the fuel pum. If I break suddenly, the engine chokes, gets very rough idle for few seconds, then either stalls and stops, or catch-up and hear the engine sound goes high again. Please advise.

Was the fuel filter replaced when the fuel pump was replaced? I'd do that first. Possibly the reason why your first pump went.

I just changed the strainer. I just noticed that by adding Gaz the car dos not stop anymore on idle, even though it has somewhat a rough idle. The problem appears everytime the Gaz tank shows almost more than a quarter.

Maybe your fuel pickup is not reacing to the bottom of the tank for some reason. I'm not sure of the design or what the pump looks like. Does it have a tube of some kind going down to the bottom of the tank which may be bent or displaced??
Also, check your fuel pressure. The pump may be new, but is it a good one? Its probably OK (strainer/filter too) or the engine would stumble under heavy demand rather than at idle while stopping.

Try Replacing Crankshaft Position Sensor I had a problem like this originaly thought it was fuel pump but it ended up being the CRANKSHAFT POSISTION SENSOR.I hope this helps.

It seems that as long as the fuel tank is at least 1/3 filled (as seen by gauge) the car runs fine. Unfortunately the fuel pump was changed by a mechanic. Yes it does have a tube going down to the bottom. I think it is very reasonable if it is theoretically displaced higher so that it can't reach the bottom of the tank.
I wll try Replacing Crankshaft Position Sensor too (have to look first what this is and where it is). But would this if broken work fine if the tank is filled?

i have the same problem... I idle fine but hard turns or sudden braking on a low tank usually results in stalling. I just keep gas in the tank and drive. Usually if it starts doing that I know i need more gas.

I havent been able to stop the car from doing that, but it isnt a major thing so I just make sure the tank is filled. Not much else you could do without having to tear the damn car apart.

I have a similar problem on a 1989 chevy. It has been this way since new. The problem is the sending unit for the gas gague. The repair was expensive so I just know that 1/8 tank means I am walking. :-) . I just keep gas in the tank and drive.

you really can't rely much on gas gauges on older cars. I have a 93 pontiac, and after i fill up, i get about 200 miles until its at 1/2 a tank, then another 20-30 before its on empty.. its all screwy
