Ok.. Problems with the 96 RS eclipse. My car runs great except every once in a while it will just cut off while sitting at a red light and then it will start right back up with no problems. The same problem happens going down the highway around 70 mph. Except the car will just lose power and jerk for a second and then it is fine and it keeps running. I guess because it is getting more gas flow than it sitting at a redlight and that is the reason it doesnt just cut off and I have to start the car back up. This doesn't happen all of the time. Just here and there but it is starting to happen more often. I was hoping that someone knew what might be wrong? this problem was happening before new timing belt and water pump. I also have recently replaced the thermostat because the old one was getting lazy. again the problem was happening before all of these repairs. BTW my radio stays on when the car completely cuts off.. I have an aftermarket so it isnt loosing total power. I have been talking to some friends about my problem and they are just guessing by what I have told them, but could it be exhaust and the cat clogged up? the EGR? Any ideas thanks. If you need better description just let me know. There might be something I am missing.

check your fuel filter, pump, take a mechanics stethescope and while engine is running listen to the injectors,(should be clicking or ticking and the sound should speed up as the motor does)
good luck

Well I have had my fuel injectors cleaned just recently and the fuel filter was changed. Could it be my fuel injectors are going bad maybe?
It only acts up when it wants to.

I would really like more feedback if possible.. It has been to the dealership and inspected and they couldnt find anything wrong with it.. so please some help would be appreciated. How could I check my fuel pump myself? If I remember correctly the mistu place inspected it and said it was fine.. so I am really clueless on this.

ya, i would agree it is your fuel, check for leaks, lean rich adjustment, and check to make sure there is no debree in the fuel system

How can I check to see if there is anything in the fuel system? As far as I know there are no leaks. I have used gas treatment too. Not sure how well that stuff works but it was a try. I dont have a A/F gauge so I really dont know about all of that.

this is an inconsistent problem, right? is it more prone to happen when cold, or is it after driving for a bit?

Yes it is inconsistant. It usually does not depend on the car being hot or cold. It acted up the other night fresh a little less than 4 miles down the road and then I stop at a redlight and it just completely cuts off.
then it will do it whenever it has been running for a while 15-20miles down the road. Totally inconsistant and in no pattern. Sometimes it will not do it at all. These are the kinds of replies/questions I am looking for that help out with the description and hopefully the narrowing down of this problem..

About the radio, if it is aftermarket someone has wired it wrong. I think it is because the constant power and the other power wire are backwards something like that.

Well it is actually wired like that because so I can play the radio without having the car power turned on.

dunno, I thought we were talking about your motor cutting out......
oh well, for the radio thing just call crutchfield and get a aftermarket connector for like $5 thats what I did.

We were but someone posted something about my radio staying on and well the connector is no more. It is directly wired because no one had a connector and I was impatient so I wired it myself. But anyways, I am guessing my problem is with the fuel pump I am not sure.. Maybe one day it will just die and then the problem will be solved. Does anyone know where I can get a new fuel pump for my car and also what size?

You can check the fuel pressure coming from the fuel pump by using a fuel pressure gauge, i can hook it up on the fuel rail on my 95 eclipse ( i don't know where it's located on the 97) it should be 47 to 50 psi for non turbo, 33 psi for 2.0 turbo and 42-50 for 2.4 and 3.0. You can also check the EGR valve, the MAP Sensor, the injectors themselves (you can check if it's good by disconnecting the cables to it and measuring for ohms. Most sensors can also be checked by measuring for ohms if they're good or not. How do I know all this? I have the same problem, just haven't gotten around to doing all this stuff yet.

Thanks for the information. I'll check into doing some of that one weekend when I have some free time. That is part of my problem I am so busy going and doing and working and school etc. Its just a really annoying problem. I'm glad someone else has the same problem I do.

also you may want to check your idle air control motor mounted on the throttle. when you disconnect the wire connector on it you should see 6 pins. check for 38 to 52 ohms with a multimeter on pins 1 and 4 then 2 and 3. the pin sequence is top row 1,2 and 3 .. bottom row 4,5 and 6. it's funny i've been working on tanks for about 7 years now and i'm only now getting into working on cars. i keep expecting to see a turbine engine under my hood!

Well I just recently started with cars. I'm a computer guru but cars is a different story. But I am learning for sure. I do have a volt meter and I'm going to see about going to a local garage and having them look at it or using their tools because I know the person that owns it.
