I have a 1997 5.2 v8. I have had this vehicle several years. 1 transmission, 1 rear end, 3 water pumps, 1 abs module. You can say I have had my share of problems. Intermietint hickups at 55 or 80.

This old roblem, around 55 sometimes 80 the engine seams to jerk really hard like it is shifting in and out of overdrive, seams to get worse in warm weather. Had the trans checked but it did not code, was thinking tourqe converter, but the mechinic says nothing wrong with trans.

Today the stangest thing happened. Right about 65 miles per hour the tachometer went to 0 but engine still running then check engine light poped on for a second, followed by a backfire, then the engine restated on its on. This happend 3 times on the way out. Let it sit for a while was shure I was going to have to tow it home but it seamed to run ok. The only problem is now it seams under powered.

I am thinking o2 sensors and maybee carbon cleanout, hoping that is all it is. kind of scared the heck out of me being as I was on the interstate, not a good place to loose power.

Has anybody else heard of a jeep having the check engine light pop on and the tachometer go wild like that. I went to auto store but they want 200 for the computer readout meter. I guess it is back to the garage for this jeep yet again.

I have 140,000 miles on it would like to put about another 80,000 before i kill it.

My wife has the 4.0 engine in her jeep and we hae never had any of these problems with hers, I am wondering if the 5.2 liter engine is a dud for that year.

Any help or sudgestions Thanks Eric.

mystery solved bad crank shaft position sensor, damaged distributor cap and 2 spark plugs that were bad. Hmmm I just had them changed 26,000 miles ago.

Oh well new crank shaft sensor 105, rotor 5, distributor 6, wires 56, sparks 48, and all the agrivation of having to crawl on top of the engine. Not to mention having to find somebody with an odb to find what was coding 50. :uhoh:
