Low oil pressure in a 3.4

Hello, and I'm glad I found this forum. Being the new guy I don't know if this topic had been covered, but .... I have a 1997 Venture 3.4 with 63,000 miles and my oil light came on. My service station changed the sender, and when they has it out, they check the pump pressure, and at idle when it drops below 8 psi, the light flickers on. They said it could be an oil pump or internal engine damage. I do have the oil changed at regularly. I would try the pump replacement first, but thats just me. If the pump is bad, is it a job that a "shade tree mechanic" can handle?

Thanks,
Havisman (John)

Very unlikely the pump is bad, more like bearings. Excessive worn bearing clearance is usual cause of low oil pressure.
8 psi. is not bad at idle, some sending units don't come on until 4.

Just out of curiosity, have you had to change the head and intake gaskets on this. The reason I asked is I changed the ones on mine after the intakes blew, (put intake gaskets on them then 2 weeks later the heads blew, dealership said that the intakes had nothing to do with it so i had to pay labor and parts again) I got antifreeze in the oil and it washed out the bearings causing EXTREMLY Low pressure

No, the intake gaskets were never replaced. Thanks.
