99 Grand Am stalled during a flood denver80904 04-10-2004, 11:49 PM
Hello everyone, Tonight my 99 Grand Am stalled while going thru a foot or so of water. The battery seems to be fine but when I turn the key to try and start the vehicle, it only makes a clicking sound. The lights, radio, wipers, etc all work fine. So if you have any suggestions on what may be wrong and how to fix it that would be grealty appreciated. Markgase2000 04-11-2004, 01:20 AM it could have gotten intake flooded or fuse box got soaked you never know. denver80904 04-11-2004, 02:32 AM Ok so what should I try to do or look for there? :) Markgase2000 04-11-2004, 12:07 PM if water got into your intake you could have problems but i highly doubt thats what happened. Sounds most likely the battery is really low on juice and the rundown protection wont allow you to attempt starting it (clicking noise) or if the fuse box is wet You have 3 fuse boxes one on drivers side and passenger sides that you can see when you open the doors. Then the main fuse box under hood. Look at the fuse box under the hood , take the cover off and let it dry if its wet , try to start it every half hour or so. Lots of crazy stuff could happen when you drive through deep water. denver80904 04-12-2004, 11:43 PM Well took it to a repair shop they said the intake is wet. They also said I may need a new engine. Ouch. Hope it's covered on warrenty or insurance. Markgase2000 04-14-2004, 01:54 AM well water getting in the intake is not goin to void your warranty , im very surprised the water did that and even more surprised cus my air filter was wide open and set in my bumper for the longest time and i love to , pardon the expression "ford through deep water" infact i stalled it real bad once and took off the air boot and low and behold it was soaked. Now I would NEVER suggest this to any one with a car like mine , i had my buddy turn over the engine and i sprayed a quick shot of ether in and it started , so i drove the piss out of it and never had a problem since. I later added some fuel system treatment to help from the ether use. shark2000 04-15-2004, 01:56 AM When my battery did that, it was the battery. It was bad, even though the lights, radio & everything else worked without dimming lights when trying to crank the engine. It just clicked like a low battery. And about water in the intake, I did that with my truck one time. The engine just stopped. I took the air cleaner off, and there was lots of water in it. Hard to start, but once it was started again, there wasn't anything wrong. What kind of shop was it? Not one of those shops that try to take you for all they can? If you still have warranty, take it to a GM dealer. Markgase2000 04-15-2004, 10:18 AM Dont tell the dealer that you drove through a flood , say its been wet outside and raining if they ask. Dont give them any reason to deny you your warranty. denver80904 04-19-2004, 11:30 AM Well I have called the insurance company and they quated 3082.00 for a used moter. So I called Pontiac here and I can get a new engine for 3500.00 installed at the Exxon shop it's at. Including labor and tax. So I think I'll do that instead of worring about the warranty or GM. Thanks for the help everyone. dfrancis329 01-26-2008, 06:27 PM I own a 99 grand am with a 6cyl. and drove through a creek with about the same depth of water and the engine just quit. It was hydrolocked. I pulled the plugs out and it turned over fine while shooting all the water out. After changing the oil 4 times to remove all water, it runs again but is idling at 3000 rpm's.
