My car has been idling a little rough lately. So I had Midas check it out and a code for the Secondary Air Injection came back. What is this for, a sensor? The check engine light has been on for some time but I thought it was b.c I forgot to get it reset from last time b.c the fuel injectors needed cleaning.

I had this problem too. Paid $200 to find out there is a SB for water taken in via the intake that damages the air valves. The valves are $250 and labor to replace was $500. I am living with the check engine light for the time being. I also get an ocasional rough cough.

What is SB?
This sounds exactly what is going on with my car.

service bulletin? If there is a TSB covering it you can find the titles anyway at alldata for free.

According to the local GM dealer, the TSB covers water in the intake damaging the secondary air valves. I have not been able to find the SB, but continue to look.

It appears that this is a common problem. I have this also on my car. If I reset it and drive very conservative it will stay off, but as soon as I get on the gas a little, the check engine light comes back on again. G.M. obviously knows about this deficiency, but are they doing anything about it?

Yes they know, but nO, I don't think they are doing anything about it. I was off warranty for three months when my issue arose. I'm not sure spending the $600 to fix it would be worth it, and I don't know if I can change one of these valves myself.

I was driving with P0410 for 8 months, untill 6 weeks ago I desided to do the tune-up. My Aurora had 180K kilometers on it, so it was time to do something...
It appeared that my Plugs were completely burned - down to the isolators. Mechanic also replaced PCV valve, cleaned the throttle body, did the fuel and air filter... He also scanned my Oxigen sensors - they were OK.

After all, he told me that my P0410 will likely disappear pretty soon. Because of the poor plugs, engine had poor (incomplete) fuel burn, so my Oxigen sensor registered higher oxigen content and interprited it as the Secondary Air Intake vacuum loss - like it was sucking air into the collectors due to the leaking Sec. air intake valve(s).

Indeed, in 3 days Check lignt went off. Then, in 5 days, it came back for few hours, and disappeared again.
One month later I am still driving without Check (Keepping my fingers crossed!)
Actually, this can explain the fact that your car is running "rough latly". Sec. Air Intake will not affect your engine performance - you should not mention any difference at all while driving. I would affect emission during the first 90 seconds, but then....no way!
Try tun-up: plugs, injectors, throttle...everything what can affect burning... At the end, It can be O2 sensor too, but start with tune-up.

Good luck,

Neta

Thanks, I'll give it a try.

Sec. Air Intake will not affect your engine performance - you should not mention any difference at all while driving. I would affect emission during the first 90 seconds, but then

If the SAI was being injected into the exhaust while the vehicle was in operating range, this will cause the O2 sensors to read lean and cause a driveability issue.
SAI is used during startup and should not come on when the vehicle is in closed loop.
You could have a shut off valve that is defective or a pump issue.
The water being ingested by the SAI pump is caused by the intake hose to the pump and not the intake manifold of the engine.
The bulletin isnt that hard to find and it was just revised on the 19th of this month.

Know of any place where it can be obtained for free? I found all kinds of places that will sell it for $25.
