Has anyone ever ran out of gas?

Just wondering. I did a lot of running around today and was a couple lines above the empty mark when my car ran out of gas on me. I KNOW I KNOW but I was only a couple blocks away from a good gas station and I figured I had a enough gas to pass up all those cheapy stations because i dont use "shit gas" as indy refers to it LOL. Anyway, called auto club and they gave me gas and it started right up. Quesiton is, by it being "NOT ALL THE WAY EMPTY" could I have a gauge problem or something else or is this the way these cars are? Car started right up and drove pretty good to the gas station but do you guys think I may have damaged anything??? I also noticed that when the tow truck guy put the gallon or so in the tank, when I started it, it was at the 1/4 mark!!!!!!!!!!!! And my fuel range was 68miles!!!!!!!!! WTF????? :eek7:

I had similar experience. Running from couple of lines above empty mark to below the mark till I found a gas station finally.
Warning kept on beeping, the "Service Engine Soon" light on.

However after I filled the tank, everything's OK.

Never drive if the oil is low. The Olds Aurora eats fast than you thought.

Well, in a lot of cars when its at the 1/4 mark its not really a 1/4, because the needle goes way past F.


If I were you I would add in some Fuel Injector Cleaner on a full tank of gas.

The Aurora is simply amazing on gas on the hwy, 4000lbs at 80 mph, most of the energy is momentum, however, hauling 4000lbs around in the city and its gonna eat.

Typically on my car, the gas gage sits WAY past F for almost 90 miles before it his the F line. Bearing that in mind I make a habit of not letting it get past 2/3 empty. NEVER a good idea to let the fuel run low consistantly unless you want to be changing your fuel pump in the near future. That pump needs to stay cool and lubricated with fuel at all times.

Don't run out of gas anymore!

Heed the low fuel range warning on the DIC too...its very handy!

yes, I have learned my lesson, the tow guy thought my girlfriend did it since she drove where I was to sit w/ me and I was so pissed. He assumed I drove our other car to sit w/ HER. I know he couldnt understand why I/HER passed up the AM/PM mini market gas station back 2 blocks!

When the Aurora was first introduced back in '94 I recall reading a review that spoke specifically about the fuel gauge's non-linearity at low fuel levels. The article addressed the accelerated decline of the guage from the 1/4-level to E as compared to its 3/4 - 1/2 change. So, from this early review it sounds like there is some inherent inconsistencies.

The reason why your's seemed to indicated that you had fuel when in fact you did not seems inconsistent with this review. Conversely, my '95 acts almost identically to the review's claim.

Hmmm, well I know one thing Im not letting it get lower than the 1/2 mark again. NOT WORTH THE TROUBLE/DAMAGE/$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$. Although, the way the gas prices are in southern ca. A repair may be cheaper than a tank of gas!LOL

I think GM calibrates all of their fuel gauges this way... it's a psychological thing to keep the gauge on full for the first 90-100 miles, as AuroraStar said, and then plummet like a rock.

I personally fill mine up at the first opportunity when it gets into the yellow (1/8) zone on the gauge (i.e. DIC dings - can't stand that). In wintertime, I refill anytime I get near 1/4 tank. You're absolutely right, you don't want to do this very often as it can kill your fuel pump (which is another known failure point on Auroras - one fellow on another board had his die in the middle of the Holland Tunnel - yikes!)

well if i were you since you ran out of gas replace your fuel filter

Very good advice...who knows what kinda grit got pushed thru the fuel lines when the tank went dry...btw where is the fuel filter on these cars?

The fuel filter is located on the underside of the car, in front of the left rear tire (driver's side for those directionally-challenged :-)

I dont know but I need to replace mine, I'll just follow the lines from the gas tank and find it that way.

I've also noticed that if I have anything less than 1/3 of a tank or so and shut the car off, it'll be somewhere around 1/4 tank lower once I start it back up. It's quite the thrill going from a quarter tank down to E when I get back in.

We learned the hard way about the Aurora's fuel guage. On our's, empty is really when it shows 1/8 of a tank left. We have run out of gas 3 times so far, with no repairs on the fuel pump yet.

We've learned to watch the electronic fuel usage, and when it says we've used 16 gallons, we start looking for a gas station, because at 17 gallons, it is empty.
