Just wondering -
Is the 3.5 engine in the new Aurora and in the Intrigue a V6 version of the Northstar 4 litre ?

Apparently the 3.5 V6 DOHC is very similar but they chopped 2 cylinders off the end and called it Shortstar.

Anyone want to confirm or deny that? I hope to set the record striaght once and for all, we have been talking about this on BonnevilleClub for a while now.

I pretty sure the 3.5 is more then just a 4.0 Northstar with two cylinder choped off. The 4.0 Northstar having 8 cylinders means that each bore must have a displacement of .5 liter,8x.5=4.0 Liters. If you just chop 2 cylinders off the 4.0 you will have a 3.0 Liter displacement, not 3.5.

The 3.5 is a derivative design of the original Aurora V-8, yes, but with some engineering changes.

I don't have any article links handy that point this out, but, if you want to know more about the Northstar V-8, go to this site:

If its a derivative of the V-8, then is it a 90 degree v-6? Aren't 90 degree v-6 not as well balanced as a 60 degree v-6 due to the uneven phaseing of the pistons and crank? I'm not really an expert here so I'm just curious.
