Newbie: 96 JGC Speedometer flaky->shifting problemsjaygeedubbya 04-04-2004, 10:28 PM My speedometer has been kind of flaky for awhile. Previously, it only happened when I was on the highway. At that time, the vehicle ran at 75-80mph with no problem. It really didn't bother me that much, so I didn't worry about it. Now, it gets flaky all of the time. I have noticed that if I am stopped and the speedo doesn't work when I start going again, then my transmission will not shift. I decided to experiment a little. I unplugged the transmission speed sensor, and there was no ill effect when driving. I reconnected it then disconnected the speedometer sensor, and the car would not shift. So, I ASSUME that my speedometer sensor needs to be replaced. The car runs great 90% of time time, but when the speedo doesn't work, I am nearly stranded. If I pull off the road, come to a complete stop, the resume, it works fine. IF I am right about the speedo being bad, where can I pick one up and what is the approximate cost? I should add that it is a 2WD 4.0 liter. Thanks. jaygeedubbya 04-07-2004, 01:14 PM Someone has to have seen this before. Another question: If I remove the speedometer sensor from the side of transmission, is transmission fluid going to pour out? jeffkidd 07-23-2004, 12:37 PM I have the same problem with my 96 Grand Cherokee. It has a 6 cly, and 4x4. I did replace the speed sensor and it didn't fix anything. Also when you pull the speed sensor out, be prepared for a mess of tranny fluid. Jeff 94 Cherokee Sport 4x4 96 Grand Cherokee Larado 4x4 bw79072 07-10-2005, 04:08 PM I have the same problem with my '97 Grand Cherokee Laredo 4.0 2wd...speedo goes nuts, causing tranny to not shift right, and check engine light on... I took it to Auto Zone and had the code read...I forget the code #, but it said something about speed sensor, so i replaced the one with the 3 wires on it (driver' side on the tail housing, has a little square thing looks like the end of a speedo cable) that's held in place by a single bolt...didn't fix it. So I go back and get the other one they showed, which is a 2wire unit that screws in like a drain plug (located on driver's side, a little forward of the tail housing, right above the crossmember)......still no help. Surely SOMEONE has had this same problem and found the solution... Here i am, $70.00 down for parts, and still no satisfaction... Any ideas, anyone? vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
