My father just recently purchased a used 2002 Impala. He purchased it in Sept. 2003 with 53,000 miles on it. Over the winter months, he has only driven it probably once or twice a month. Last fall, he replaced the battery thinking that was the problem. Now the new battery appears to be completely charged but no connection when the switch is turned over. Has anyone had the same problem? I'm wondering if this is the same problem that they are having with the 2001 Impala?

check to see if security lite is on or flashing after trying to start, if so passkey switch may b at fault

As Jay said if the theft system light is flashing (or on steady), leave the Key ON and wait 10 minutes. If the light is flashing it should stop after 10 minutes and the pass-lock will be reset. Turn off the ignition and try to start. I had this problem with my 01 Malibu. It turned out to be the pass-lock sensor on the ignition switch. (just traded the Malibu for an 04 Impala)

BypassKit ( www.bypasskit.com ) makes a product that will temporarily bypass the passlock for a remote starter to work. I sent them an email when I was having trouble with my Malibu and asked if their kit could be used to permanently turn off the passlock but they didn’t respond. I didn’t pursue it any further but it maybe it's still a possibility.

No, the bypasses will not work. I should know, I install remote starts all the time. The problem you are facing is a faulty Passlock transponder and the only fix is to have the complete system replaced.
