hey im new to the forum..my jeep 98 has 130k on it and over the past month or 2 when i put it in reverse sounds like its going to die but doesnt it just bogs down even when im still on the brake and when i am moveing in reverse it goes and then its like it just goes to idle then back to gas it doesnt do it in drive plz help its an auto btw and i dont know what it could be is if any1 can help let me know plz (cant spell for my life lol soo if something is worng sorry )

sounds like some sort of a computer problem, on the newer vehicles almost everything is. maybe just take it to a shop and get them to do a diagnostic on it

I am having the same trouble with my 90 cherokee, 4.o, auto trans, If I give it any gas while in reverse the motor sputters and acts like it is going to stall. If I try to back up any kind of incline I'm stuck. Any luck with your 98? Anyone else have an idea for a DIY Jeep owner?

Update I have repaired my reverse problem. I found that I had 2 bolts missing and 2 bolts very loose on the tranny bell house to motor. I was trying to fix a clicking noise when in park or nutral, also a clunking noise when braking hard. thought it was going be motor mounts or tranny or axel but got lucky.
time to go wheeling.
