Ok, so there's a 10AE in my area for sale at a dealership for $4,000. 118k miles on the clock. I don't trust dealerships too much, so I might look for another one. If I decide to do so, should I see if they have all the service records? If not, should I just back away? There's also another TII about 10 minutes from my dorm at a dealership with 80k miles for 500 less, so I have another option.

Bleh, dealerships... That 10AE motor is on it's way out. I recommend checking the other one.

You can prolly talk that dealer down a few hundred bucks with that many miles on the clock, esp. if it's a turbo. Don't forget that there were only 2500 (iirc?) 10AE's made, so there's people out there that would kill for them. Just be ready to rebuild it soon.

If you honestly don't care and/or you don't like white cars and/or you don't wanna rebuild the engine anytime soon, i'd go with the less expensive one.

I think it's 1500. I love white FCs, but as of right now, paint isn't that important to me. I'd rather have the engine running well than looking super amazing. There's always time for a respray.

So I went to the dealership to check it out the possible 10AE and this is how the conversation with the dealer went:

Dealer: "Can I help you today, sir?"
Me: "Yes, your ad on Auto Trader says you have a 1988 Mazda RX-7 here?"
D: "Ooohh...yea...did you call earlier?"
M: "No."
D: "Well, turns out there was a leaky fuel line and the car um...caught fire. It's being repaired right now, but you can still buy it once the work is finished"
M: "Not a chance *walks back to his car* "

injectors, water overflow is different, ecu is differnet, harness is differnet, different stearing wheel, different seats, the two tone seats are pretty rare if it has those. Its pretty much a bunch of little stuff. What color is it?

It's kind of a gray color. The guy is gonna send me more pics that I requested (interior, gauge cluster, more exterior and engine shots) and the VIN later today. I'll be sure to post up pics

Well, now my dad is being retarded. Bringing up things like "I don't think i'd want to buy a car I haven't seen yet" and "I'm concerned about the reliability of an RX-7." Just thought of an idea to combat the first issue: A friend and I wake up early on Sat. morning, drive down to South Carolina, meet the guys, drive the car. If I like it then my dad and I could meet them halfway the following weekend. If I don't like it, oh well...it's not like my car only gets 11 miles per gallon, so that's just $20 or $30 spent on gas.

I wouldn't worry about the 6000RPM's. The ports aren't frozen shut because they open at 3800, so they've definately opened. 6000 is 1000 below redline, so I wouldn't worry that much. But if you do get it you should take it to 7k often. ;)

oh I forgot 7k is redline on those... S5's is at 8k... so they probably aren't frozen shut... but still be sure and check everything out

Its time to learn you ALL. Frist off your all talking about ports opening... Its a TURBO II were talking about here... Turbos have a 4 port motor which doesnt not have the actuated 5th and 6th ports... those are on the NAs. Second the redline of a S5 TII isnt 8k its 7k. Only the NA s5 went to 8k (as far as FCs go anyway). And I can almost garrenty that it HAS been taken above 6k RPM. If his son wanted to put in a boost controller then he probably drove it... and if wants to put in a boost controller he probably wants to go fast(er) which means in all liklyhood he has taken it above 6k RPM. Anyway, its not like you all DONT know your stuff... its just that you confused the NAs with the Turbos (as far as setup) and anyway I could be way wrong... but Id sh*t a brick if i was. Happy rotoring.

i sold my 89 in december 2003 for 1800 bux with a racing beat road race exhaust system and lowered on some BBS looking things.
I guess i was just done abusing it and ready to pass it on to another young soul......lol
