intercoolersDeleriousZ 03-31-2004, 08:44 PM i've been looking around a bit for intercoolers that would work well with my integra.. so far i've come up with the revhard 27*6.5*3 and the DRAG polished front mount 27*7*2.5 and a whole bunch of other one's about that size from different random internet sites... which one would be the best for me to aquire? any brands that are better than others? most likely going for air-air intercooler.. preferably that can hold 500ish hp just in case thanx tran_nsx 03-31-2004, 08:49 PM all of them should work fine, i personally will be getting spearco's intercooler and probably paint it black. DeleriousZ 03-31-2004, 10:18 PM spearco's eh... i'll look into that.. and why would you paint it black? that big bad silver thing behind the stock bumper would tell people that it's a bad idea to mess with me:p DeleriousZ 03-31-2004, 10:31 PM is that about the right size tho?? anyone know what the biggest i can fit is? i was looking at some 27*10 ic's.. i measured it out on my car and it looks like 6 or 7" would be perfect height.. i'd really like to keep the stock front end tho... suggestions? tran_nsx 03-31-2004, 10:52 PM for the 2nd gen and 3rd gen integ, the correct fmic size would be 28x6.5x3. to answer about the black color question, yeah having the exposing intercooler would be bad a$$, but then it would be too eyecatching. most of the imports might get a little intimidated after they know what i got. also im trying to make my next car look clean and sorta stock beside little things here and there like cf hood, being lowered, and maybe rims, not definate yet, since i also eventually want to put a jdm front conversion. another problem is the legality and smog issue, i could get the greddy kit to pass smog, but it wouldn't be as powerful as the t3/t4. man, all this spending is pissing me off so its going to take me a bit to get, i also eventually have to get a bike maybe a gsxr, or a cbr since all my friends just got thiers. :banghead: DeleriousZ 03-31-2004, 11:11 PM hmmm, i see.. only good to 425 hp for the spearco one's... kinda sketchy but i'll deal. yeah i'm not too worried about scaring off other imports, cause they won't be much competition anyway.. (set up to be is estimated around 400hp). there isn't much of an import scene up here anyway.. maybe 40 or 50 modded cars around town.. if that. i'm not too worried about being totally street legal, as the police up here don't really check for it.. considering they only bust you for too loud exhaust for 6 weeks out of the year (spl meter things down in the lower mainland most of the time). anyway..what are you running on your car now? sounds interesting Neutrino 04-01-2004, 10:34 AM well one thing that I see a lot of people overlooking is how much that intercooler will block airflow to the radiator. Remember the radiator is way more important than the IC. This is why i personally like the Apexi Gt intercooler since the fins are a bit more spaced apart alowing for more flow behind it. And tran_nsx i hope that black paint will something specific for IC's with very low thermal resintance because normal paint will reduce drastically is cooling capacity. DeleriousZ 04-01-2004, 06:40 PM hmm i see.. but what kind of hp can the Apexi flow? and doesn't the long and skinny shape of the intercooler permit air to flow around it too? just a thought Neutrino 04-04-2004, 08:04 AM hmm i see.. but what kind of hp can the Apexi flow? and doesn't the long and skinny shape of the intercooler permit air to flow around it too? just a thought well for exact hp levels you should call apexi, 1st hand info is always the best about air flowing around the IC, i would ignore that, since you want a good size intecooler chances are that it will be as wide as the radiator so if its in front of it only the air passing trought will matter tran_nsx 04-04-2004, 12:03 PM anyway..what are you running on your car now? sounds interesting just some minor bolt-ons here and there, intake, exhaust, axles, plugs, and wires- nothing too big. this will be my commuter car so im not trying to put anymore money into it. And tran_nsx i hope that black paint will something specific for IC's with very low thermal resintance because normal paint will reduce drastically is cooling capacity. thanks for looking out neutrino. yeah i figured i needed a special paint but haven't really looked into it because im still kinda debating if i will paint it or not. i might but im 100% not sure yet, another color im interested in is white since thats going to be the car's color. DeleriousZ 04-04-2004, 02:37 PM well, about the ic blocking airflow.. i meant the height instead of the width.. my bad.. i drew up a little thing in ms paint of what i thought it'd be like... this way the rad still gets a bit of flow over top of the ic.. not sure tho, just a theory http://www.freewebs.com/delerious93integra/radintercooler.JPG ms paint is l33t Neutrino 04-05-2004, 08:40 AM well, about the ic blocking airflow.. i meant the height instead of the width.. my bad.. i drew up a little thing in ms paint of what i thought it'd be like... this way the rad still gets a bit of flow over top of the ic.. not sure tho, just a theory http://www.freewebs.com/delerious93integra/radintercooler.JPG ms paint is l33t well yeah it depends a lot on the intercooler. The problems appears only when it blocks a good amount of the radiator. If its not too tall and it doesn't block then you should be good. Just talk to manufacturers and get the size specs from then and measure them on your car see how they fit and how much they block. There are plenty of ICs out there to choose from. DeleriousZ 04-05-2004, 06:33 PM well i went out and measured it... 6.5 is about the height from the bottom of the bumper to the bottom of the car, so it prettymuch completely blocks the front vent for the radiator.. there are a few inches on each side tho, so air can still get in a bit.. EG_Civic 04-05-2004, 10:25 PM Im just really, really nitpicking but sometimes running a bigger intercooler will make your pressure drop. Most companies have worked on this so it shouldnt be a problem for you. Anyways it wouldnt be a lot. Im just saying some people are freaks about stuff like that. Neutrino 04-06-2004, 08:45 AM well i went out and measured it... 6.5 is about the height from the bottom of the bumper to the bottom of the car, so it prettymuch completely blocks the front vent for the radiator.. there are a few inches on each side tho, so air can still get in a bit.. well then if it blocks you should look for IC that let a lot of the air pass trough them. as i said apexi gt is one of them uless they changed the design recently. Im just really, really nitpicking but sometimes running a bigger intercooler will make your pressure drop. Most companies have worked on this so it shouldnt be a problem for you. Anyways it wouldnt be a lot. Im just saying some people are freaks about stuff like that. that is correct but its often remedied by increasing the boost a bit to compensate. What I am more worried about with a huge intercooler is the increase of lag. Tranzlogic 04-06-2004, 04:01 PM i agree, i have a XS front mount IC, big as balls takes up the whole front of the Sol... But i yanked the a/c out and im prolly gonna put a full size fluidyne for a integra in there with a electric FAL fan to try to make up for it .... hmm you know if you have a kit on there or some kinds place to run some cheap bendable plastic tubing from home depo or somethin you could run it hidden behind a grill in the kit or something back around the intercooler or behind teh radiator to make a ram air duct(s) to help it out alot...hmmm that could be a good idea DeleriousZ 04-06-2004, 05:05 PM yeah that does sound like a good idea Tranzlogic.. i'd try it but i'm trying as hard as possible to keep the stock body.. maybe a type R kit or something because my bottom front lip has a slight gap in it on the right side... and it's that ugly plastic.. so replacing it would be nice. as for pressure drop, how many psi would u think that'd be? haven't they made intercoolers that are a bit more efficient yet? and increased lag... i could see how that would work... but i'm sure it couldn't be too drastic? maybe a few hundred rpm? EG_Civic 04-06-2004, 10:26 PM as for pressure drop, how many psi would u think that'd be? haven't they made intercoolers that are a bit more efficient yet? and increased lag... i could see how that would work... but i'm sure it couldn't be too drastic? maybe a few hundred rpm? Monster intercooler is claiming 0.2 PSI drop on their intercooler. I would think it would be more than 1 PSI though. I have no clue on the lag though Neutrino 04-07-2004, 03:32 AM yeah that does sound like a good idea Tranzlogic.. i'd try it but i'm trying as hard as possible to keep the stock body.. maybe a type R kit or something because my bottom front lip has a slight gap in it on the right side... and it's that ugly plastic.. so replacing it would be nice. as for pressure drop, how many psi would u think that'd be? haven't they made intercoolers that are a bit more efficient yet? and increased lag... i could see how that would work... but i'm sure it couldn't be too drastic? maybe a few hundred rpm? I just though of another intercooler that might be good for you. The srt4's IC's are decently large but not tall at all so it should leave most of your radiator open Plus i bet you can get a good deal from someone with an srt4 that is in the process of upgrading his. It should hold about 300hp IMO Monster intercooler is claiming 0.2 PSI drop on their intercooler. I would think it would be more than 1 PSI though. I have no clue on the lag though yeah in my experience most good sized IC cause about 1psi drop oi_boy 04-07-2004, 04:36 AM on suggestion would be....if you have a vented carbon bonnet on there, you might be able to take the radiator off the front mount position, and reconfigure your set up so the radiator is top mounted. it would look kinda stupid when you open your hood, but performance is all that matters. it would take alot of time and effort, but if you want full functionality you could do it. duplox 04-07-2004, 09:28 AM 1psi drop is about right... Also, about blocking flow to the radiator... remember, the air in the intercooler and therefore the air after passing through the intercooler is only going to be hot when you are on boost... So basically if your IC covers the entire radiator(which it shouldn't) you'll run your car without a radiator when on boost - but how long are you on boost at a time? Unless you're goin for the land speed record and are gonna have the hammer down until you hit top end, I doubt you'll be on boost for more than a few seconds at a time. Your engine can last a few seconds without a radiator. If you're driving particularly hard, just keep an eye on your temp guage. If it starts to creep up, lay off a bit. Neutrino 04-07-2004, 10:19 AM 1psi drop is about right... I've seen IC that are quite thick and with fins dense enough to block almost completelly airflow or at least severily impare it. Then on or off boost you will have a problem if it covers a good chunk of the radiator. Maybe I'm a bit more picky about that but I like club racing and autox a lot and their season is ussually in the middle of summer. So cooling is vital. Tranzlogic 04-07-2004, 10:36 AM i was always under the impression that when using a large IC and large plumbing set up it is usually a 2 psi drop, so when using more standard setups 1psi sounds right on the money. altho i dont know about relocating your radiator...lol you would be much more effective to relocate your IC, but even that would be a pain considering having all the plumbing custom bent... i say just get a nice sized cooler, not to big but not to small, keep in mind that there all gonna pretty much fill up the front of your bumper considering there is little space....just upgrade to a nice FAL electric fan or whatever brand you prefer and maybe even an electric water pump, that will more than make up for the diff....you should be good to go man. oi_boy 04-07-2004, 01:50 PM yea getting a top mounted intercooler would work as well, but the only problem with my first suggestion and this one would be that you would need a scoop on your hood to get adequate air flow to whatever you decide to relocate. it would cost alot of money because youd be buying the IC and a bonnet that would work. like tranzlogic said, just find a good functional air cooler and upgrade your fan and water pump. remember, aftermarket products are usually more effective and efficient than the factory parts. Tranzlogic 04-07-2004, 02:03 PM sound good to you delerious ?? DeleriousZ 04-07-2004, 04:37 PM oh boy... lol maybe i should outline my plans in every single one of my threads.. or just post this one in my sig.. http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=203670&page=2&pp=15 yeah, i suppose i have to upgrade most things with this kinda set up, but hey.. what's money when you can smoke any v8 within a couple hundred km radius :) would a new rad be suggested as well? Tranzlogic 04-07-2004, 05:01 PM if you wanted to go all out then yeah, i would reccomend a fluidyne or maybe a koyo high flow aluminum...Fluidyne is a really good highly respected radiator, i would go with them. But it only flows a medium percentage more of coolant..but that can make all the diff. sometimes. expect to pay 350-450 for one..also remember you can always do the set up we suggested and if you do run a lil hot you can always add the fluidyne at that point...tuning is always trial and error..even signal and top fuel, greddy, hks etc build their vehicles on trial and error to get the best optimal performance DeleriousZ 04-07-2004, 06:23 PM yeah, your set up would be much cheaper, maybe i'll be able to get away with it.. we'll see Tranzlogic 04-08-2004, 10:05 AM im gonna start building this cooling system soon, so if you have any questions let me know man and ill let you know how i performed it DeleriousZ 04-08-2004, 04:50 PM sweet man.. sounds good.. it's gunna be a while tho.. once i start making money :p tran_nsx 04-08-2004, 07:15 PM hey any of u guys thinking of of getting a turbo kit? im about to get the fmax (turbonetics) kit by the end of this month so if ur interested i can get a really good deal, this also includes a ceramic ball bearing turbo at no additional cost. DeleriousZ 04-09-2004, 02:35 AM i'm goin completely custom build.. so no takers from my side tran_nsx 04-09-2004, 02:52 AM cool, i was about to get the rev hard then decided to go custom in the last min. then this came up and i just couldn't go for anything else, especially for this price. DeleriousZ 04-09-2004, 02:56 AM what kind of price are we talkin? tran_nsx 04-09-2004, 03:08 AM well just look at this way, a ceramic ball bearing alone is going to cost bit over a grand. retail for this kit is from 3899.00 to 4950.00, but these prices are way out of my league. right now i should be getting the complete kit which includes everything even a free case a their turbonetics synthetic motor oil, well i'll just put a copy of what u'll get below. the prices will be about 2500.00 plus 50 dollar shipping, this is basically half off and your getting very high quailty products at a very low price. even the air filter is from k&n, these guys sure did their homework, and what would u expect from a company who makes one of the best if not the best turbos in the world. Kit Contents ... Ceramic Ball Bearing Turbocharger (T3/T4 Hybrid or Custom T04E) Spearco Intercooler System Powder-Coated Intercooler Piping Silicone Hose / T-Bolt Clamps Exhaust Manifold - high carbon cast-steel with ceramic coating Fuel / Timing Controller (electronic fuel / timing management system) Fuel Injectors "Evolution" Wastegate Assembly "Raptor" By Pass / Blow Off Valve Assembly Mandrel-bent ceramic coated Downpipe with closed-loop wastegate discharge Intake System with Air Filter All necessary Hardware, Hoses, and Fittings Free Case of Turbonetics TS-1 Synthetic Motor Oil MSRP: from $3,899.00 to $4,950.00 if u think about it, this is the best upgrade for the price. to swap in a b18c1 now a days is about +4500.00 and all u get is 30 more hp then the b18b1. on the other hand, 2 grand with this method can get u about 80 hp, thats pretty unbeatable. of course there is still going to be all these guys who is going to waste all their money getting little aftermarket products that would get them 1-2 hp. pretty lame if u ask me, but hey its thier decision not mine. i want to add on this artcle too after i read one of the thread where some of the guys were putting down turbonetics customer service: http://personal.riverusers.com/~yawpower/turbonet.html DeleriousZ 04-09-2004, 02:08 PM Damn that is a smoking deal.. good thing i'm poor! that's a pretty good story about the turbonetics customer service, but you also have to take into account that that guy was an actual shop, that probably ordered stuff from them all the time. still.. good story for business. tran_nsx 04-09-2004, 02:31 PM heres a pic of the kit: http://files.automotiveforums.com/gallery/watermark.php?file=/503/80346turbo_system.jpg the reason why its such a "smokin deal" is because the store who is selling the kits have a good relationship with turbonetics and because it the stores newest product so what they are doing is testing the market. an example of this is when a company makes a new product they have to let the consumers know what it is and what better way to do this is to give a really good discount or handed to people for free, too bad it wasn't for free though. lol. these kinda of promotions happen all the time in big cities so people can give out word of mouth advertising which is one of the best way to promote a product. this happened to me a couple of times in the past, and probably happened to u too. one event was when snickers were handing out their newest candy bar i forgot what it was called, and they were handing out tons of them to people just walking down the street. about the story, yeah he was from a shop so that does kinda have its priviledes; however it was only one product they wanted, and of a course a customer is a customer. well bro, if ur interested let me know, u won't regret it, like i said earlier, this deal is too good to pass up  DeleriousZ 04-09-2004, 03:00 PM oh i would love to buy it, unfortunately i have about $0 in the account.. so i won't be buying anything for a long... long while :( tran_nsx 04-10-2004, 02:50 AM we're kind a off topic because of me, my bad. yeah alot of guys are kinda in your situation too, if i had the money i would buy 2 of them and get one for u and have u pay me back later, or another option is to sell the 2nd kit at a bit of of a higher price. the delema though, i only got enough for one kit and i'll be broke until the end of the month so thats going to hurt, but oh well, sorry i couldn't help. getting back on the topic though, most intercoolers if im not mistaken shouldn't cover up most of the radiator. they are like the one u have made up in your creation. i think the only few times where it would block the radiatior is if u go for a custom intercooler. DeleriousZ 04-10-2004, 03:00 AM yeah, thanks for the thought man, it's muchly appreciated. i could always take out a loan and then send the money or something, but i still owe a bunch of money on my car as well as i have to save up for insurance and all that wonderful stuff. yeah, like you said.. the right size for the fmic on the gen 2 and 3 integra's is 28x6.5x3. that takes up the whole front grille area, so i'm pretty sure i'd have to be able to let the ic flow air through it in order for the radiator to get the correct amount of flow to it. on a second second note.. that's a good pic of your car tran... very sexy indeed... love the height that it's riding at... how much did you lower it? tran_nsx 04-10-2004, 04:04 AM on a second second note.. that's a good pic of your car tran... very sexy indeed... love the height that it's riding at... how much did you lower it? my teg came lowered already b4 i bought it, so that was a plus. the only think i had to add to the suspension was a camber kit. i believe it was a 1.5-1.7 inch drop, on the stock steelies my car was pretty low, the rims i got now gave it a well balanced look, not too high, not too low. the only gripe i got is that i wish the rear end would come down just a tad bit more, but oh well, im done adding money into this car, its my a-b vehicle. heres a plan i created if ur interested next time in modding up your next car once u paid this one off: i use to have a 91 crx si about 5 years back which i got for 6000.00 with only 55 k miles. yes 6000.00 is kinda steep, but u had to see this car, it was imacculent, driven by a married lady and pampered by her husband every weekend, this vehicle was well worth the money. anyways, it was my first car that i had to require loan. the payments were like 250 a month for 24 months. i also had to get full coverage insurance since it's not my car yet, this came out to 130 a month mostly due to my age since i was 19 back then. basically i was paying almost 400 a month and i didn't have much for the good aftermarket products such as turbos and superchargers. as time passed, i was getting really annoyed that i didn't have much into the car. right when i was about to be done paying for the it, i had side collision with a truck, piss me off man, but luckily no one was hurt and i had insurance. i then said screw the car payments and instead bought this 92 integ in full for 4500 via atm transaction. this was a better idea since now the car is fully mine and i didn't need full coverage, now im paying 600 a year which breaks down to 45 a month for liability. basically the only payments i have is the 45 dollars but i only pay that in one lump sum once a year. what ever i money i got left, i now can use that money for mods instead of not having enough due to the monthly payments. after some thought, i finally decide to get another car for a strip/street project. this time instead of getting a loan like the crx or purchasing a newer car in full (which will be extremely hard), i decided the best way to do go about this is to get the mods first then get the car. once u get the car all u got to do is put the parts in, this i believe is the best route to go. for a vehicle, this time its going to be a 3rd gen integ probably a 2000 or 2001 model with really low miles, adding a turbo kit in a high mileage engine can be risky. as far as the trim, i've been stern on the ls due to its better power results using turbos; however, after contemplating it over and over i decided to get the gsr, not because of of the motor, but because of the full packaged amemities. have u seen the newer gsr's rims? those things are freaken sweet. like i said b4 i want my next teg to look almost stock besides a carbon fiber hood, it being lowered, maybe some rims, and if my budget can provide it, a jdm conversion. later on if i want to get a motor transplant due to high mileage or wear and tear of strip use, i can always opt for the more affordable b18b1. so i f i were u, take it from me and do this last route next time. the only way i think this will fail is if i decide to say screw my project car, which i highly doubt. would u give up that easily if lets say u got a turbo kit, lsd, and a jdm conversion kit ready to be installed in your new waiting to be bought car? i think not. with a car, all u need is a down payment then the month payments, and u already have all your parts just waiting to be put in. if this post is really long , my bad, i just wanted u to fully understand my approach and help u decide whats a better plan for your next project. DeleriousZ 04-10-2004, 02:54 PM hmmm, interesting approach... here's mine that i've got planned out... find a newer gsr engine.. bring it home, set it up on an engine stand.. start ripping it to pieces. pull everything apart.. replace all the internals, polish the head, get an all new valvetrain, assemble it all back together.. make sure it runs, then start fabricating parts for the turbo, like the manifold and intercooler piping and all that great stuff. most likely drop the engine in if i opt for the full swap which will indeed be quite pricey, but complete sets are much easier to work with. besides, i can sell off the parts i don't need after on ebay. that way i don't have to go searching around for the alternator and dist. and stuff... and i already have an lsd tranny (are those any good?). after that all i need to do is buy the parts for the turbo, mount it and everything, then do some dyno tuning and i'm good to go. sounds easy... until you factor in all the tools needed and the time waiting for parts and all that.. plus the money thing... i'm estimating i should have everything ready and assembled by early next year.. i'm thinking by the time they've cleared most of the roads from the sand and gravel. ( i love canadian winters) probably going to get a winter beater for well.. the winter so i can have my car in pieces and not worry about it. it's all going to cost me a hell of a lot of money... but it's going to be a hell of a lot of fun to do, and a hell of a lot of fun to drive when everything is up and running. that's one option... the other option is for me to go LS/VTEC... but i think i'll stay away from that one because my engine now has about 149k on it.. so i'm sure the block has taken quite a beating... wow, what great fun!! vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
