Hello all, im new to this forum so bare w/me. Just bought an aurora today, well actually I gave a deposit and will pick up my beautiful 1995 next week. Anyway, the gearshift button that you push to put the car in gear comes out (the button) is there anyway i could replace this or would it be better to buy a new shifter? Also, I think I need weather stripping for back window, its showing the bottom of the actual glass like the weatherstripping needs to be pulled up in the back(back window)
is there anything else I should check before I give the owner the rest of my money? I took it around a couple blocks. Seems pretty good, has 105,000miles so i cant be too picky right? Its very clean though, im gonna need brakes and maybe rotor/rotor resurface soon but overall im happy. "SO FAR" Any info on that knob or any info at all on my car would be GREEEAAATLY appreciated. Thanks.

Have a mechanic check out the a/c system. The compressor seems to go at around 100k. If it's on it's way out it might give you considerable wheedle room, since a dealer will charge $1200-$2000 for that job.

she's giving it to me for $3000, dont wanna be too much of a buthole since she wanted 3500 and she came down a bit for the few things i did notice, but thanks a lot dsatt I will check that. What year do you have? and have you had alot of problems?

Seems like most of the typical stuff. I have a 95. It had 100,000 when I got it. I'm up to 180,000 now.

Sticking EGR valve when I bought it off an Olds/Caddy lot. Man was I steamed when it started stalling the first f'ing day. ~$60 parts/$60 labor

A/C compressor was already pretty much shot due to low refrigerant level. If you run it low on r-134 for any length of time it's toast. Big $$$$, though it sounds like I paid too much.

Started having a misfire- new (Delco only!) plugs and wires cured it, though I did have some issues with a lot of carbon buildup about then too. Cleaning out the intake manifold area and running a good fuel system cleaner fixed all that. Again, I was gouged. Expect $140ish in parts- can do yourself pretty easily.

3/4th gear shift solenoids crapped out in the tranny. There's a filter in the 95s that is held in with a plastic bracket. Newer ones have a metal bracket. If the tranny gets hot (summer in Iowa will do apparently) and the filter is plugged enough to add a little extra back pressure out if comes- breaking off the shift solenoids to either side when it does. $300

radiator sprang a leak at the little plastic expansion tank right where everyone else's seems to. I paid $600 'cause I was lazy that week.

and lastly, my alterntor died last december or so. I replaced the original battery at the same time more or less. Boy did I feel like an ass since I didn't previously know the battery was under the back seat. I think I spent an hour trying to find it under the hood. That was ~$200-$260 for the part and about the same for labor. It was December and my garage isn't heated, OK?

Just don't expect maintenance free operation and you won't be disappointed. I really do love my car- it's just a tad more expensive to own than my wife's Hyundai.

As for your shifter knob, I'd think just replacing the whole shifter after you get it would be the easiest bet. There is at least one thread on how to disassemble the shifter/console area. Talk to someone parting out a car ( on ebay?) or maybe a junkyard to find a replacement shifter.

Man this forum is GREAT!!!!! dsatt you have been great!!!!! Thanks a bunch!!! Have you heard about the recall for the fuel rail? I test drove the car today and the are was on, it seemed pretty good but who knows from what ive been reading!!! The owner is pretty naive about cars, she was actually going to let me leave after giving her the deposit, i had to explain to her that I didnt want to take the car today just wanted her to hold it til next week. I do see a prob w/ the strip between the body of the car and the back window in the right rear corner near the trunk, i guess im gonna have to get a new strip if i can find one. I noticed that black strip goes along the whole car almost so it may be expensive. Yes im seeing that its not a cheap car to own but theyre so nice looking and cool to drive (when theyre running)
