1990 Lumina 3.1 problems

My Lumina would start and run fine for about five minutes, and then the engine would start having trouble staying running it would hiccup back and forht from low to high idle and then stop. It would restart but wouldnt run very fast at all. I floored it and was going maybe 5 miles an hours and then it would hiccup and go fast then back to slow or die altogether.

Now when I try to start it, it cranks but doesnt turn over. Ive heard people tell me it was the timing belt, but Im not entirely sure that is the problem. Im really hoping itll be a easier fix than that to be honest. Im also not the greatest working on cars especially ones that are fuel injected.

Any help is greatly appreciated

Thanks

You sound like you are having a problem I had which was the Crank position sensor going out. My car would cran but wouldn't turn over. If that's what it is, the problem is kind of easy to fix.
The Crank Position sensor is on the engine block by the oil pan. You are going to have to jack the car up to see where it is exactly. You can buy a crank position sensor for about $20 from your parts store.
The hardest part is replacing it. You have to do some work to unscrew the sensor and take it out and put in the new one. It's in a tight spot. Get ready to work to get it out, if that is your problem.

Ill try getting that done this weekend. I hope it works. Its just a start with it cause next Ill have to figure out a way to get the fans to kick on when the car starts heating up. As of right now i have a sensor unplugged which makes my fans run all the time.

THanks for the tip Jay
