Gotta say right off, that I did not used to like the look of the Aztek, then it grew on me, now that I have one, I'm hooked. Great ride, all around.
I just got a used '01, and when I go in reversed, with even slight acceleration there is a clicking sound in the front axel area I think. Then when I drive forward it clicks again. Just one click both ways. I don't know why it does that, any help?
Thanks -- Brian

I have heard it could be the ABS solenoids self-checking, I haven't noticed it myself

It might be an engine mount issue you are hearing or a problem with the exhaust when shifting you are moving the engine and the exhaust can bind slightly on the manifolds causing a click noise.

Get another driver, open the hood and have them shift while you are listening to see if you can pinpoint the area.

Thanks a lot for the replies. One problem is that it only clicks when moving in reverse, and it doesn't do it if I just idle in reverse or go very slowly, only when I go a bit faster in reverse. Not too fast obviously, just leaving the garage etc. It then clicks again when I move a bit fast in drive forward. So I don't here anything when it just shifts, and isn't moving yet.

Took it to the dealership, still under warranty (sigh of relief) they tightened a loose bolt in the caliper, and then went on a trip, during which it started again. Took it back, they replaced the caliper and grinded the rotars. Now it makes no clicking sounds and it doesn't have the shakes. They also cleaned the injectors and checked everything else for us. now she's got a clean bill of health!
Thanks for your input, and for introducing me to the other sites. Now I have something good to check out between classes.
Thanks again
