91 passat...looking for hospital or graveyard just4thenic 03-20-2004, 02:16 PM
O.K., Here is my situation. I picked up a 91 passat gl with 98,000 miles for $350.00. Not many questions were asked when purchased just knew that it ran pretty good but needed some TLC. First investment was an alternator (battery was'nt holding charge). Man at the parts store said the replacement for mine was with a "W" terminal on it, when in fact that is not what came out of it and there is no wire to connect to the "W" terminal itself. Second investment was a battery. And third where most of my questions lye are on the starter. the previous owner has two wires coming from the starter to a push button on the inside of the car, meaning I have to turn the key for 5 or 6 secs., push the button and the car starts. i have since then replaced the starter figuring out the old one was a bad solonoid, but the new one will not wire in write or start without that bypass button.???since the new battery has been put in I have made it a habit to disconnect whenever i am not working on the car. the one time i left it connected I opened the car door it stunk like burning wires, and the battery was completley dead... But when she runs she runs GREAT. would hate to part with it so the hospital definately sounds better than the graveyard!!! PLEASE HELP!!! Starter and alternater help will solve this cars problems. (wiring diagram)?, (correct parts). Mikanik 03-29-2004, 05:59 PM sounds like the ignition switch went out so the person before you decided to wire in a button instead of just replacing the ignition switch. you probably need to take that button out and get it hooked back up to the ignitions switch like normal...I'll see if I can't find some wiring diagrams.
