just picked up a 1999 intrigue GX. i was more of an import guy than a domestic. i had only driven a maxima and two toys. i was a lil hesitant at the dealership about gettin this car, being an olds and all. but, i am very impressed. i have the 3800 series II, ive been doing some research and correct me if im wrong, but is this the same engine in the v-6 camaro's and firebirds. ive checked out a couple of sites with products for the car and i am pretty happy with it.

one thing im not sure about is if this is dohc or sohc, because im confused about the 3.5l and how thats a twin cam. i dont car about a sohc, thats like my old max.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Intrigue ownership. My Intrigue felt better to me than any of the imports I test-drove, and was cheaper, and I decided to hell with resale value.

The Intrigue had two engine possibilities:

1) An all new 3.5 L DOHC V-6, based upon the Olds Aurora V-8, which in turn was based upon the Cadillac Northstar V-8. This was available in Intrigues from 1999 to the end. This engine is currently not used anywhere else in GM's fleet. You do not have this engine.

2) In 1998 and some 1999 Intrigues (and possibly later), the GM workhorse, the 3800 Series II, was installed. It is a 3.8 L pushrod (no overhead cam) V-6. This engine is tried and true, one of the most reliable American-made engines, though not as powerful at mid and high RPMs as the aforementioned 3.5 L. It is used in an assortment of GM cars, such as the Buick Regal, LeSabre and Park Avenue, Pontiac Grand Prix GT and Bonneville, and Chevy Impala and Monte Carlo SS. A friend of mine has put 240,000 miles on his 3800 with no major problems. This is your engine.

To answer your question, Yes you have the same 3800 as was also in the camaro and firebird from 1996 onwards (also in about 100 front drive GM models). Note that the F-Body (Camaro and Firebird) is rear drive so if you are looking to use any parts, original or aftermarket, from an F-Body just be sure that they will work in your application.

thanls guys, yeah, it wouls be cool if someone made a rear wheel drive conversion, they made one for my old max, it was a 300zx rwd conversion kit.

i dont know if ill be doing anything performance wise to this car, i probably will. show those import kids up in a sleeper.

im very impressed with the car, now that ive removed the stock radio and installed my subs, i can live with it. much more power than im used to and most of my import scene friends cant believe that it doesnt have cams.

Actually, the 3800 Series II in a Camaro/Firebird and an Intrigue are the same engine, at least on paper. However, the F-body 3800s have a different upper intake that is cast iron - NOT plastic like the W-bodies.

sorry, i didnt mean that as a bad thing, its just that i was always used to imports, which i cant stand any more.

after driving this for over a month, i love it, best car ive ever owned.

i said it because im only 18 and how many 18 yr olds do you see riding around in newer old's.

There are quite a few of us 18 year olds driving these things, and more than a few of us have surprised an unsuspecting nissan or mustang when we blow them away at a stop light.

anyways, what performance ideas did you have? I want to find out if a Northstar V8 would be better than getting the current engine supercharged
