GMkiller is because I just toasted my Cadillac w/ the Northstar that hurt. Anyway I have a Aurora 95 know and I feel the pain creeping up on my again. I think I have a Northstar curse. I refuse to loose on this one though. Right know I have a mis in the engine it used to be worse before I changed the spark plugs (AC Delco). I think I'll break the bank and buy the plugs know. I wet the plugs to see if there was any arking, but knothing showed. The car has poor acceleration, it will starts off like there is a problem darn near putting then is shots off like a bat out of hell. The turn signal relay is hosed I'll look under the dash for that. This car is a walking engineering nightmare. Definitely some strange shuff. For instance why would you place a relay box in the engine compartment with no suport right near the hood and fender line for water to drip on. Don't get me started about a battery under my back seat. And what is this about the dip stick being the wrong length. I am about to have a heart attack just thinking about it.

Actually, the battery under the back seat is not a bad thing, since it not only helps balance weight in the car, but the environment in the car is much less harsh on the battery than underhood (i.e. they will last longer).

Did you change the plug wires? Be sure to use only AC Delco plugs and wires as they seem to have less issues. If you drive around with marginal/bad plugs and wires, you can toast your coil packs. Also, the Fuel Pressure Regulator and the EGR valve are known to cause drivability concerns (the FPR in particular is known to leak). Re: the dipstick, the original batch of '95's had one that was too long, IIRC; may want to visit a dealer who can order you a replacement. The dipstick is about the worst-engineered thing on the car (along with the old clink-clunk flasher can :-)

Thanks for the help. I found the 1406 code from the OBDII does anyone have the message list for the 96 Aurora.

FRP - Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor and EGR.

Not that it's likely to change the code you're getting since you seem to know what you're doing, but your 95 has an OBD I system in spite of the OBD II connection.

Am I correct in assuming you answered yourself with that last post?

Your problems do sound exactly like my experiences and my understanding of how an EGR valve/system works. It routes exhaust back through the combustion chambers to reduce emissions, and is factored in to the fuel/air mix. The valve opens fully at highway speeds and closes progressively as you approach idle. If it gets dirty and sticks open, your mix is skewed way off at low RPMs. It will sometimes surge as other things try to correct and prevent a stall, and generally run like crap until you get to speeds where it's close to what it should be (EGR position that is). Make sure you clean out the exhaust gas tubes that lead to the valve itself, the throttle body as a whole, and escpecially the back of the butterfly valve while you're in there. I used a nylon pipe brush I snagged from work to get down into that tubing- the carbon came right out. It just seemed like soot in there, but it sure hardened up in the movings parts for some reason.

Don't let me dissuade you from looking into the FPR too however- it's cheap and easy to get to, so why not?

Key word, Grommets. In thinking about how I could loose vacuum in the system I was blessed with the new word Grommets. They cost about 3 bucks at Murrays. You see my oil pressure sensor never moved pass 9 PSI. 600 RMP - 10 PSI, 3500 RPM 12 PSI. I read a few forum notes and figured I was okay. I replaced the Grommets, the PCV valve, and the rubber elbows on the tubes (it was not busted but its only 4 bucks for a peace of mind). The inlet and exhaust grommets did not grip the tube and PCV vavle at all, they were rather oily as well. The oil pressure now seems proprtinate to the RPM. The engine rides better w/ increased pick-up. I still get my mysterious knock noise during tip-in though. My next stop is the fuel system, but first I'm going to get a small wire brush and clean the EGR's pindle and intake tube and as much of the manifold that I can reach. This trick increase my gas mileage on my dearly departed Caddy. Good Luck!
