Just finished a nearly complete head job. Idles great. starts great. 1st and 2nd gear good all the way up to 4grand. Top of third or fourth the car falls on its face. stops accelerating or even slows down. New fuel filters and fuel pump. Decent compresion. sparks plugs look like they have been running hot. Any ideas?

Old fuel lines on a carb

is it burning any oil or any smoke out the pipes?

Smokes pretty good. Was hopping rings would "reseal" after running it awhile. I cleaned the top of the pistons and cylinders real good.

so what you're saying is that when u are in 3rd and 4th the engine feels like its choking when you put the gas pedal to the floor?

well did you hone or bore the cycl walls when you put in the new rings?

I only redid the head. cleaned pistons and cylinders from the top. Not concerned with the oil consumption at this point. Plugs have no residue on them. Top of third or fourth (Usually fourth) there is no more power. Won't go past 3700 or so. In first I could probably take it all the way to 6000 if I wanted to. Plenty of throttle reponse and grunt in first 2 gears. Crap in 3rd 4th and fifth

i had a similar problem and the problem was that the engine was not getting enough air and if i floored the pedal it would just choke out at certain rpm's. what i did to fix the problem was to take the dish over the filter and cut the outer edge off so that it only covered the center of the filter, that way there was much less restriction on air flow and it made all the differance

really sound like you need air ...
that or you have a leek in the fuel line some where but you would smell the gas ...

After driving for 10 miles or so when I crack the gas cap there is a pretty good suction into the tank. Don;t know if that means anything or not. Also the catalitic converter just below the exhoast manifold is now hollow so i know the exhaust is free flowing thanks

ive got almost the same prob with my 86 ew1 crx, it happened before, i flooded the engine on my way to a basketball tournament, replace all plugs, wires, cap rotor, turned out that two plugs were fouled...
not sure if the air is the problem, but summit racing sells a filter that is the air cleaner and top dish/cap on the filter if you are concerned about the engine being fouled up with debris... it started doing this again recently, and i am going to try taking the filter cover off tomorrow... btw, it sounds like you have an intake, due to the fact that there is nothing muffling the sound coming straight out the engine...

it is not good forum etiquette to drag up old and dead threads. the original thread starter posted over a year ago and has long since moved on.

Here (http://www.google.ca/googlegroups/posting_style.html) is a set of general message board/newsgroup guidelines that have been used for some 20 years now on Usenet.

my bad... forgot to even look at when it was posted... as you can see, i am new at these forums, and i cannot find the answer to my crx that has the identical problems that this guy had, so i didnt think about when it was started

not a problem. why don't you make an introduction, let us know a little about yourself and your car and while you're at it you might as well throw some questions you might have in there.
