917!Dimex 12-01-2000, 11:47 PM http://www.bimmers-benz.com/bb/images/cars/331006.jpg They're only asking 35K for it! enzo@af 12-04-2000, 09:57 PM Yeah, I saw that in DuPont Registry. They had some cars in there that looked pretty lousy. That's a kit car, for sure. I think a real one would run you more like 3500K, not 35K. ---------- "Ferrari isn't a car, it's a lifestyle" -Enzo Ferrari. JD@af 12-10-2000, 10:49 PM That's a Porsche? Looks more like an Italian than a more reserved German car. I suppose either a kit car with a Porsche powertrain (and perhaps a drivetrain as well) as enzo suggested, or just one of their less-publicized designs. LostBoyScout 01-17-2001, 03:29 AM WBH!! (World's biggest headlights) Yeah I agree with the kitcar assumption Seb928S@af 02-10-2001, 12:55 PM It does not even look like a really 917 and its a really bad kit car. I would never pay that much for that crap. I would get myself a 930 for that much money. Robs944S 02-10-2001, 06:12 PM That's no 917!!! enzo@af 02-11-2001, 06:03 PM It captures the basic outline of the 917, but it isn't an exact replica. The spoiler and some body work on the front air dam are not from the 917, and it looks a little boxier than the real thing. Last year I almost bought a 917 kit with a few friends. We had a few K's saved up and called the guy selling it, but he had just sold it:( It didn't have an engine/tranny in it, and it needed a lot of interior work (leaking, mildewed...), but we really wanted it. JD...yes, that is a porsche. In it's day it dominated LeMans, if I'm correct. Seb928S@af 02-11-2001, 06:23 PM Yes it dominated LeMans and racing. It even got banded from racing in LeMans and later the Pan-AM racing. Bean Bandit 02-11-2001, 07:01 PM Here you go folks Porsche 917 http://albums.photopoint.com/j/View?u=1470499&a=11063338&p=40707601&Sequence=0&res=high Seb928S@af 02-11-2001, 09:32 PM Now thats nice and only a few million dollars. :) Bean Bandit 02-12-2001, 05:39 AM enzo@af 02-12-2001, 11:29 AM Of course, all of these are the 917 longtail. There are other variants as well, but I think this is the best looking. Seb928S@af 02-12-2001, 02:39 PM http://www.waletail.com/917.htm That is a good link it will tell you a lot about the 917 and the different models 917. IMO it is the best race car ever made. Dylan_Michael 02-12-2001, 04:21 PM Its called a Laser 917. A kit car bult to mimic the 917 and other cars of that era. Mostly powered by VW engines, but some have V-8's and even Porsche Engines. They are pretty ugly, and only resemble the 917 in shape. Seb928S@af 02-12-2001, 10:16 PM Yea it never look half as good as the really 917. It will never get the same performance like the 917, and it will never be a Porsche. It's a dame kit car. Bean Bandit 02-13-2001, 06:42 AM Where are my pics? enzo@af 02-13-2001, 12:18 PM The laser kit was the most popular, but it wasn't the only 917 kit. The kit car I was close to buying was almost an exact replica. It's resemblance in shape was only the beginning. It was also painted exactly like the blue pic above. But, that yellow one is a laser, methinks. Bean Bandit 02-13-2001, 04:57 PM :)THNX:) Dylan_Michael 02-13-2001, 06:40 PM It is a Laser, quite possibly the best one I have seen. Most of them are junk. And with the right engine then can be wicked, but remember, they are not a high quality car. Porsche 03-12-2001, 07:38 PM Is that the car, or very similar to the one Steve Mcqueen used? Seb928S@af 03-12-2001, 07:44 PM Originally posted by Porsche Is that the car, or very similar to the one Steve Mcqueen used? Are you talking about the Gulf. If so yes. Porsche 03-13-2001, 08:22 PM Yes I was, I don't know the whole story but I do know that he bought it for his new movie, Le Mans i think in 1970. Chris 10-28-2001, 08:14 PM The real one has 1100 hp!! jimf747 12-08-2003, 12:47 AM Hi, I have quite a selection of 917 data, it’s my all time favorite racecar. I’ve talked to Vic Elford about the 917 and about Steve McQueen in the Le Mans movie. I might be able to answer a few questions about the car from an engineers perspective. I also had the misfortune to know someone who built one those ridiculous laser things. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
