I just joined this forum, and from reading some of the threads, looks like ppl really know their stuff.

Stupid Question:
Whats all this "codes" talk. Is it like a computer diagnostic output?

Some of us don't know our stuff any more than the next guy. There are a few in this forum who are professional mechanics or are quite car savvy. The rest of us learn what we can collectively.

Codes are computer diagnostic outputs. When the Check Engine light comes on a code is stored to help the mechanic diagnose the problem. Places like AutoZone and Checker/Schucks/Kragen usually have diagnostic equipment that can pull the codes out. For the brave do-it-yourselfer, you can then decide whether to tackle the problem yourself or take it to a shop. This saves you having to take the car to the shop and finding out it was a minor problem.
