headlight problems

I have a 92 ranger that has a light problem.

I was driving at night and the drivers side headlight got dim then burned out. I replaced the bulb, but then it happened again, within a minute of turning the lights on. The passenger side light had no problem. I first suspected a short, so i checked all the wires for cracks/burns, and i also made sure the sockets were not melted and shorting out.

As another try, i took out the bulb from the passengers side and put it in the drivers side and turned it on, there was no problems, but as soon as i put a bulb in the passengers side the drivers light would dim, but i shut it off before it died. It was obvious that the light was getting very hot, but i couldnt figure it out. The lights work good with one side or the other connected, but not both. I used 2 different brands of bulbs, both were the standard 9007.

Recently, the high/low switch in the steering column was replaced, along with the master lighting switch. All the wiring seems to be in good condition.

I really have no fricking idea what is going on

EDIT: I meant to type 9004 as the bulb number, not 9007
