creaking in steering column 2001 Aurora

My 2001 Aurora has had a creaking sound and feeling with turning the wheel, slowing down, speeding up, or anything that stresses the front end. It almost feels like a bolt is a little loose allowing two pieces to shift slight back and forth. Dealer thinks it might be the intermediate shaft and wants $500.00 to "check it out". Does anyone have experience with an issue like this? Thanks

$500 is ridiculous for them to "check out" the ISS. There is a common problem with the ISS on the newer Auroras (as well as Bonnevilles, Intrigues, Impala's, et. al.) - GM has a TSB out with a lube kit for the ISS - shouldn't cost you more than $80-$140. I'd certainly try that first before forking over $500 (sounds like the dealer is trying to nail you for something... maybe find another GM dealer?)

My 2001 Aurora was doing the same thing, about a month later I couldnt steer left at all. I took it the dealer and they replaced the rack and pinion, warranty covered so I got lucky there, but it doesn't make a creeking noise at all now!!

A bad rack and pinion on a three year-old car? Hmmm.......

Actually, I have had the rack and pinion replaced twice on this car prior to warranty running out. This creaking is definitely different than the rack and pinion problems, plus it has been going on for close to a year without getting any worse. I do agree with the dealer that it is probably the intermediate shaft because I also have a Tahoe that had the exact same symptoms which was corrected by a repair to the intermediate shaft (which was covered under warranty so I don't know what it cost). I appreciate the comments on the lube kit and will take the car to another dealer armed with that info. Thanks.
