We recently purchased an used Nautica. Two weeks later it started to howl (like the fan belt)on start up and when slowing down. Now there is higher whine over the howl...does anyone know what this might be? The colder the weather, the more howl. Someone help...please.

I have the same problem. I was told to replace all the belts as well as to changer the one of the two belt tenssioners at least the one making noise. If it not broken don't bother.

Thanks for the reply. Did you have a high whine too...like a pulley or fly wheel sound?
We have encountered another problem. It is sporatic but very upsetting. When slowing to make a turn or just come to a stop the van just quits. It happens around 40K, if it happens. It starts up immediately but can be very dangerous at busy intersections. Sure wish we could buy NEW because used always has some problem...hope this isn't a fortune to fix.
Anyone out there with some helpful ideas of what I can do???

check your power steering fluid/pump......you may be leaking fluid onto your belt, causing the squeal and if there is low level fluid, turning the steering can cause increase pressure in the steering causing stumbling or the engine to go out,,,,srt of like when you turn the wheel ALL the way around....

I have the exact same problem with my '95 Villager (squealing noise when turning or just starting the vehicle and accelerating). It happened pretty much all of a sudden. I had previously taken it in for an oil change and they told me then that they saw that the belt was cracking. So this would make sense that the problem is being caused by the belt. I am also having the 'spooked locks' problem as well. I found some great information on some things to check for that, so hopefully I'll get some time this weekend to look into it. If anyone is interested in that info, let me know and I'll post it.

By the way, what was the deal with this site supposedly shutting down?? Joke or no?

Thanks to all. The previous problems have been dealt with and doing fine...no more whines and the stalling was a sticking throttle...
JDCarnes talked about the 'spooky locks'...could you please send info on what to do about that? It happened only once but who knows maybe that will become more of a problem??? Still liking the van...
Does anyone have info on hidden lights for towing on this van? We were told it had had a trailer hitch but cannot find any way of lighting.
