All of the references I've found for resetting the oil service light have been pre-2000 and all 3 series. On my 2001 540i is the procedure the same? I can't locate a 20 pin connector in the engine compartment. Is it in another location or is there a completely different procedure all together? :disappoin

have you tried takin it to the dealer and ask them to reset it for you. it takes less than 15 seconds, i've heard of dealers in the states charging a fee. i'm in germany and watched a 19yrs kid reset mine on my 5.

It's the round black thing on the passenger side fender well under the hood. It's just behind the air filter box and next to the ABS unit.
The cap unscrews and the pin connections will be visible.

newer ones dont have a twenty pin connector. The oil service is reset in the cluster. hold the left button on cluster, turn ign on. wait. it will come up with word RESET? press again and hold, when blinks press again and you are done.

UNLESS you know EXACTLY what you're doing, DON'T ground ANY pin, ANYWHERE ! ! !

I have uploaded a picture to the General Automotive Images which shows which pins to connect and a written procedure for resetting the service lamp. Look for "BMW service reset connector.jpg"

new ones dont have the twenty pin. OBD2 means that they have the standard type connector and after a certain no. of years of overlap where the vehicle had both connectors they dropped the twenty pin connector.

My mechanic (who charges $130 for an oil change that includes the reset) told me that BMW dealers charge $175 JUST to reset the light if you have the oil changed somewhere else. Apparently the diagnostic machine costs something like $9,000.

I have no idea how to reset the lights myself.

the 'service lamp reset' procedure on most '98 and newer BMW's involves only the key and the ODOMETER buttons....i think someone's posted something close to the correct way. if not, i'll post it in a day or two.

Hi krga94a:

The Bavarian Autosport company sell BMW Oil service light reset tools for BMW for less than $100.00. Their website is: http://www.bavauto.com/

Or you can see them on Page 86 in their 2004 Spring and Summer catalog.

Hope this helps! :grinno:

IF the S.I. board in your cluster is good, the safest way is to purchase one off thaoe inexpensive reset tools you plug onto the 'diagnostic connector' that's near the t-stat housing..............IF the 'Inspection' OR "Oil Service' lamps stay on while your driving, the S.I. Board needs to be replaced.

You hold down the milage tripper on your cluster untill it says test and starts blinking. let it go and kit it again and hold it till it says reset then hit it once more time and dont touch it again.

So hold, hold, hit.
