There's a variety of opinion about the UN. Some would like to see more UN involvement whenever nations are in conflict. For myself, I think that making the UN the global authority might restrain some nations from rash action, but also has a down-side for human rights. The UN has gotten a lot more assertive about telling third world nations what to do, lately. For example, they will only offer food relief to a country in need if that country consents to government-enforced population control measures. The policy, to reduce it to a rhetorical device, is "We'll give you some rice as soon as you are sterilized." I'd rather we fed people, educated them, and raised their dignity to make better choices for themselves.
