On the aft face of the differential is the speed sensor.

There is a rubber boot over the connector.

The splashed water still gets in and causes failures.

Clean the connector and use some petroleum based grease to seal it.

Install the rubber boot and you should be good for 10 years.

In my 85 735i the Si board shorted out. You can check yours by removing the steering wheel. Then there are 3 screws at the top of the cluster under the dash right in front of the plastic. then just tilt it forward and out to check for loose connections and look for burnt electrodes. you can find a replacement at a junkyard for about 20 bucks. I replaced my entire cluster from a 1983 733i. check out http://e38.org/e23/ for more info.
