We just bought a 1991 Buick Century, this is like a new car to us. We have never had Remote Keyless anything. I like that feature (although I question if others can open my truck, doors, etc-- copy & paste this link http://www.aint-it-cool-news.com/voices/980430/1.html - this man had a possession problem with his remote keyless ! But with our '91...as soon as you start it, all 4 Locks AUTOMATICALLY lock (not when you put your foot on the gas like my father in laws car- that would be SOOO much better! ). Even the dealer turned on the engine & shut the door locking himself out showing the car to us! I know Buick did this in the name of Safety, BUT this has got to go!! :uhoh: I want to know if I can DISABLE this automatic locking feature when I turn my vehicle ignition- but still enjoy my Keyless remote ??(until if & when it gets possessed). Or is it a matter of ALL or nothing, Meaning disabling one thing disbables it ALL? Thank you

Carry a spare door key in your wallet. Insist on car wash attendants riding through with your car. Don't get out of your car if the engine is running.

I have a 1995 Century and the factory system locks the doors only after:

engine is started,
all doors are closed,
trans is shifted out of park...

It then will only auto unlock the doors when the key is turned off.

But the power lock button will unlock or lock the doors at anytime.

I do not have keyless entry. In fact I didn't even know 1991 models could have factory keyless entry. Maybe yours is an aftermarket system.

Other GM models auto lock like mine and then unlock when you put it in park. I think that was the 1996 and later models.

The GM dealer can disable the auto locking feature and you should still have keyless entry unless it's an aftermarket system and then you have to find who made it and contact them for instructions.

What is an aftermarket product or system mean? I am just a woman and don't understand any of these terms? My husband will be putting a key in his wallet & plan to do the little magnetic lock box thing, although I hate to do that. I worry about locking my purse in the car by accident. SO how can I find out if this is aftermarket? I did ask the Dealer about this issue, he sounded like there was nothing that could be done. They bought this car at an auction, I got a really good deal I think. It was a 1991 Century, 56,800 miles, 2.5 engine, looks great, drives great (so far), everything clean, not many bells & whistles, pretty basic -but that is what I preferred. For $2000. I love everything about it except this automatic locking when I start the engine.

What's the name on the remote control?

There is a repair for your problem I will have to find it for you!

But try this first some GM cars worked this way! Turn your key on press and hold your door power lock nutton in the unlock (if this don't work try the lock position) Shift your car out of park and back into park let the switch go and try to see if it changed.

Let me know if this didn't work I will have to search thru the shop manuals if it don't

Aftermarket means the keyless entry or the door locks were installed either by a dealer or by a previous owner, rather than installed at the factory when it was built back in 1991.

Husband tried to do what Flatrater said, but this did not work, maybe this would have worked if it was the Auto Lock when you put your foot on the gas situation. Ours locks as soon as you start the ignition. Oh well, I think I call live with it. Now after all the doors lock, I have made it a habit to just immediately unlock MY door so I won't get locked out if i happen to have to get out of the car while it is still running. Good enough, plus I hid a well concealed key to unlock the doors. There are certainly other problems worse than this one. Still don't know if the Keyless is Aftermarket or not. I know the Keychain thing is not a buick one, no name on it. Thanks !

Ahh, that's what I needed to know. OK, have hubby crawl up under the dash. Look for anything that looks aftermarket or that it was added later. You should see the ignition wires and there should be a "pink" wire that comes down from the ignition switch. Well, usually most aftermarket keyless entries have a "yellow" wire that connects to the ignition of the car. Well, when the keyless entry "sees" the car has started (12v to the yellow wire) it autmatically locks the doors. Just simply unhook that wire. The locks will never selflock itself again!
