Realistic tow capacity 99 2500 TD vs 7.4L staatsof 02-22-2004, 08:21 PM
I'm actively looking for a 98-99 2500 and I'm hauling a 7000 lbs max 24 ft enclosed car trailer. I won't bet at 7000 but 6800 is very probable. If the TD with 373 or 410 going to be enough? How will it drive? A real strain or what? Also since I haven't driven the 2500 TD as yet just how noisey is it? About average or what for a diesel? What can I expect for MPG empty & towing? Does the 7.4 just have that much more capacity? Bob S. bigeasy 03-08-2004, 01:08 PM I have "the big one" (7.4 vortec suburban) and I can tell you it pulls the wheels off of my 24 foot boston whaler (+ trailer = 5200lbs). i launch and pull up this heavy boat from some pretty primative ramps here in so. louisiana, and my truck has never so much as strained at the task. i can pass traffic on upslopes with trailer in tow. it's a beast! more than i need. gas consumption is not awful. 12-15 mpg hwy with the trailer. big 48 gal tank. mine is a '96 with about 130k miles, but looks great and drives like new. drop me a line if you're still looking. i like interesting deals. a 1500 tahoe would fit easier in my parking garage. BAJA34ft 03-18-2004, 03:13 PM :dunno: I have a 99 with the 7.4 vortec with 410 gears with a cat back exhaust and K&N air charger and it pulls my 6400 lb. boat & trailer up all the hills in Ky with no problem passing anything going under 70 mph.
