Hello everyone.

Well I finished it last night.
It came out looking pretty good. The flames are time consuming.

Thx to everyone for their comments in my WIP thread (Work In Progress)
Here is my progress thread, it kind of shows my steps.
http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=179705
We can let that thread go in the abyss :)

Now I just have to frame it and give it to my cuz-in-law for his b-day.

http://files.automotiveforums.com/gallery/watermark.php?file=/500/35634cobrashow.jpg

Car: 14x6 in.

Paper:
24x19 in. Bristol Vellum (smooth paper but has some tooth for the pastel to take) (I have tried Bristol Smooth but it seems too smooth, it is very good for graphite)

Media:
Pencil, color pencil outline, marker, pastels, wht gouache paint (done in that order) (the paint really brings the artwork to life)

Tools:
Grid method (sketch entire car), French curves & flex curve & ellipse templates (to get hard lines and clean up everything), I used Grumbacher workable fixative between pastel layers added paint and then used permanent Grumbacher fixative, once you use perm. there is no going back. :)

This work would not have been possible w/o frisket film and my X-acto knife.

For further details pls check out Thom Taylor's book How to Draw Cars Like a Pro.

My tuts. (not the best but offers good detail)

Take care and thx for peeping it.

Yes for accents only. The gouache really makes the work complete. I wish I had taken a photo of it before I added it but I did not.

Yup it is hard to see where I used the gouache paint. Baically I follow Thom's suggestions but sometimes I just add where I think some highlights should go. It really does wonders for the chrome parts like the bumper brackets and rims. There is still improvement for chrome rim rendering. But I think they came out pretty good for my first chromers. :) My favorite (most successful part) is my sideview mirror.

I used a 0 round brush for larger lighlights on the body but I mostly use a 5/0 round brush for the rims. I only use white no other paint. One must be carefull not to have to much highlights.

Tip for painting detail:

Hold the brush like a pencil but then roll your hand out and away from you so that your palm is facing towards your chest and your thum is facing up (finger nail side). Start a stroke and move away from your body (out). You can get nice straight and curved lines that way. Have paper or tracing paper to rest your hand on (remember pastel had already been applied and even if you use workable fixative you can still smear it).

Thx so much everyone. I appreciate your support. :)

No prob. w/ all the ?s

Man I wish I new what I wanted to do. But right now I have a year of college left my major is Information Management Systems. I have thought about switching to graphic design but man I am like 29 yrs old and my wife and I have been married for 5 yrs and we want to have kids. Switching would require more schooling and ofcourse money is a factor. Basically my professional background is Computer Networking and Solaris Unix.

I wish so much I had started college around 20yrs or younger. I really wish....I really wish...I did that. But I don't think too much about it now, cuz I can't change what I did in the past.

That is why I really want most of you youngunz to go to college I know it is hard to want to start life (after high school) and stop going to school but the is what life is about, learning. I don't want to sound too much like a parent or something but peops need to read books esp. about finances since they don't teach that stuff in school.

Since this is my thead and we have no moderators :) I want to recommend two books that everyone should read (esp. young peops)

Life on the Edge by Dr. James Dobson
buy used they are dirt cheap, and your public library should have this, it is a best seller, if you just want to check it out.

The Four Laws of Debt Free Prosperity
by Blaine Harris, Lee Nelson (Editor), Charles A. Coonradt

Ok back to the artwork.

I did think about some kind of background to set the car off but then I got scared and didn't want to mess it up. Thoms has some cool techs. about adding backgrounds by masking off the car (frisket) scraping pastel and then taking a napkin soaked in Bestine solvent thinner (I think) and smearing it.

PS: I hope you guys didn't mind me going OT a little. :)

Take care Alfred

Oh, Thx TuscanRaider and all you other fine artists for your kind remarks.
