hey team,
i recently just sold my 1995 civic dx coupe with 199,000 miles on it, for $3000. but anyway, i was looking at used cars and i found a 96 integra gsr for $5200. however, the title is salvaged. from what the seller tells me, all they stole was the radio. do you think i'm taking a risk by buying it? i only plan to use this car to drive around and do the basic mods (intake/exhaust/headers)

they don't salvage a car if just the radio gets stolen ,something else happened to it , i would not buy one but if you really want it take it to a shop and have them go over ever inch of the car

The KBB is like $6,000. Because they are in demand, true market value will be a ittle higher. The stereo would have had to cost atleast $7,000 for it to get a salvaged title. But that still doesnt make any sense. They only salvage a car if the cost of repair is more than what its worth to fix and would be a waste/total loss. You could just reimburse the system and still have a perfectly fine vehicle. A salvaged title should make that car worth much less then what he is asking.

i'll have to ask him what else happened to it. But when I test drove it, the speedometer wasn't working, so the whole time i was going 0 mph. I noticed that he didn't have a valve cover saying "DOHC VTEC" The guys who broke into it, didn't get to drive it because he had a lock on the brake pedal type deal. But they could have messed with the engine. but when i test drove it, it was driving fine. except when i was at like 5000 rpm, i didn't hear any VTEC. does vtec engage later than 5000 rpm?

for the title to be salvaged...the damage done to the car had to cost more than the car's value....so unless it has like $7000 damage it wasn't totalled.

also i think on the 96 gsr's had the little vtec sticker on the back-right part of the car..and vtec valve covers (not positive on the valve cover)

kthxbye

yeah, the guy took of the sticker, but there's still some sticky residue where it used to be. some goo gone will take that off right?

Whats the redline? If thats working try and take it to 8. You should hear VTEC at around 5-6. The valve cover may not be the right one I guess. Look on the engine block, and also the intake manifold should be different than an LS. The strut bar probly got jacked too...

yeah, i didn't see a strut bar, but whats the difference between the gsr and ls intake manifolds

or maybe the car just isnt a vtec....tell him to prove to u that it is a vtec...

now lets not forget they stole the radio and the speed sensor thing (thing that makes the speedometer work) haha. but gsr's should have a stock strut bar right? to make sure it's a vtec, i'll just check the engine code. it should be on the left side and towards the bottom, right?

the whole story sounds pretty fishy, he's not telling the whole truth. get the VIN number from the car and run it on carfax.com it will tell you the whole history of the car. also for the price of salvage, it is a little high. i'm pretty sure you can find a good integra for a good price, all it takes is time and tons of research.

does anyone here have a carfax account that can run this for me?

well just check the engine code in it, it should say b18c1 and ur v-tec should kick in at about 5-6 or 5-7 rpms. I can go check the car if u live in s.cal if u need n e help in it.

Is it a salvage or is it rebuilt? the insurance company valued the loss hingher than the actual car, so they salvage it and thats when theres a SALVAGE title, then someone buys it and fixes it and then there is a rebuilt title given. If it still shows salvage on the title theres probably something still wrong. Just look next to the header on the left on the engine block and check the engine code. but this situation sounds a little strange.

yeah, i agree with the strange part of this. i ordered a carfax and i ran the VIN, and like the last time it was registered that mileage read 160k, but the guy is saying there is only 117k on the car, and i saw with my own eyes, 117k!.

"wtf, mates?"

well, the whole interior was probably stripped, and he got a cluster from a parts teg. the gsr should say B18C1 down by where it bolts to the tranny, the intake manifold should come out of the head and come up, then drop back down as it gets to the fitrewall, other tegs are opposite, valve cover should say DOHC VTEC(does a non vtec valve cover work ona vtec car) my friends B16 valve cover didnt look like my B20 valve cover, the bolt hoels were in differnt spots i think(cant remember its been a LONG time since they were side by side) and you SHOULD hear the vtec kick in, it is definately noticable on the DOHC VTEC's

and my first teg was salvaged and I had no problems with it, was fast, handled good, rode smooth, did have a bad 3rd gear synchro but non-salvaged title tegs get that too, but if this guy is lying about everythign there must be something bad he is trying to hide, so I dont know if I would do it.

its good if you have a integra allready so you can strip the car and use what is remaining thats all they are good for!

i think i'm gonna have to scratch the whole salvaged idea and save myself the trouble and just get an integ with a clean title. even if it does mean going a little out of the budget to get it.

thanks everyone :)
