Hi all,

This *may* not necessarily be the best place to post this - so I hope I don't piss too many people off.
I am planning to get rid of the standard engine in my '84 280E Mercedes (a remarkably agricultural 2.8 litre mechanically fuel injected twin cam six) and replace it with a turbo'd Japanese in line six. . .I was really only choosing between an RB25DET and a 1JZGTE - and the 1JZ wins hands down due to price and standard power output.
Now, I'm not expecting too many problems with this swap being that the Merc has a pretty big engine bay but I'm just after a couple of details about 1JZ motors before I start chucking money around. . . .
Firstly, is the oil pump pickup located at the front or rear of a standard 1JZGTE? Are the sumps symmetrical (meaning that if the pickup is in the wrong place, can I just shift the pickup and put the sump on backwards).
I'll be looking at an auto box for this swap. . .are the autos attached to 1JZ's 3 or 4 speed (or does this vary depending on the car they are out of)?
Does anyone have any idea how physically wide a 1JZGTE block (between engine mounting points) is? I'm not worried about the head or ancilliaries - just the block.
And finally - do the 1JZ's (or at least their transmissions) have a takeoff for a mechanical speedo drive, or are they all electronic?

Any info anyone can give me would be great - I'm flying in the dark here for a bit and kind of feeling my way for a start, so it's good to have a source of reliable info.

Thanks,
Pete in Perth, Western Australia

So. . .nobody here knows *anything* about 1JZGTEs?
Could anyone suggest a place I could get more info, then?

No, I know plenty about them and what I don't know I can easily find out, it's just that (no offence to you personally) I don't want to help someone put either one of those marvelous engines into a mercedes :headshake .

Heh. . .point taken!
Maybe you could think of it as a community service. . .ridding the world of one more fuel-sucking dinosaur motor in favour of an automotive jewel??

LoL, nice try  Either of those engines will also be gas guzzlers, well atleast if you use them to there full potential. I'm gonna leave it at this, my opinion is your just going to have to work at it like everyone else who does "unique" engine swaps. I will say one thing I think might help you out alittle though, there are 2 different pickups and oil pans for the 1jz, a front for the JZX90 Chaser and a rear for the JZA70 Supra.

Fair enough - I'm not looking for step by step instructions for my swap - just a bit of background info before I start throwing money around. The oil pan variations are exactly the type of thing I need to know. . importers that I've talked to here in Western Australia seem to know *nothing* when it comes to the details of what they are selling.
As for fuel consumption - my Merc weighs around 1500kg and gets around 17mpg (imperial gallons) too produce around 110kW. Even a stock standard 1JZ has close to double the output and (from what I have read) gets around 20-24mpg in heavier cars (1600-1700kg Soarers and the like). Still. . .fuel economy is not my main concern. . . .

Thanks for your help. . .every little bit gives me a little extra hope that I might just get there. . . .

Hey,

I think its ridiculous of these other guys not wanting to help if they know the info.. just downright elitist.

Anyways, do you still want some info on the 1jz? i recently put one into my NA supra and although i dont know the details myself.. can probably get you intouch with those that helped me.

The auto tranny that was available in in the Toyota Soarer, or the Lexus SC300 depending on your market, had a 4 speed auto. It is electronicly controlled, and the speedo pickup on the tail of the transmission is electronic as well. I am not sure of the exact width of the engine block. Try checking at
