I have a 92 Civic Si and at 40 MPH the other day, the engine stopped completely (no surging or sputtering) and the check engine light came on. After I coasted to a stop, I smelled an electrical smell (like a fried TV) inside the car. No smell in the engine. All the belts move. The fuel pump works and lights and radio all work fine. I tried checking the ECU codes and didn't get a response. A day later, the electrical smell seems to be from the ECU. How can I check the ECU? Any other thoughts on what look at next (I'll check for spark tomorrow)? Thanks.

Wow, never heard of someone frying their ECU. Check the wires coming off of it and make sure there isn't a short in any of them.

My 92 Si is still dead. I tested for spark - no spark. How can I test the ECU? When I jump it I don't get any codes. Help!

do the dash lights still work? you know your seat belt warning and srs, etc, i've never heard of an ecu burning out in a honda, but other cars for sure. but my guess is if you took the computer out and it smells like burnt mother board its fried. i may have an extra p28 si computer that came out of my 93 hatch when i did the swap i can sell you. but i good luck either way.

All the dash lights (and other electrical) work fine. The motor won't turn over. I'm not positive the smell is from ECU. There's no plug spark. I can't get error codes. Does the paperclip work for an ECU from a 92 Civic Si (P28)? I've got the 2P plug from the green rubber boot, but it won't give codes with a paperclip. Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated.

Found the problem - a capacitor in the EDU burned.
