Steering column

I have a 1996 Aurora, great car, the problem I am having now is the steering column is very loose. I took the column apart and found out what is wrong. The metal bracket (actually I think it is an aluminum alloy) located in the center of the column there is a "ball" in the middle, is broken. My question is should I attempt to fix this problem or take it to the dealer? I have concerns about the air bag and also seems to need special tools. If anyone knows roughly how much this should cost to fix?

I just looked at my exploded view of the steering wheel and do not see any ball in the schematics so not sure what you are talking about. If your worried about price not of the parts in that area cost too much, you'll probably pay more in labor than anything. As with the problem I do agree with Indy8 and think you should probably have a shop look at this at least asap.

That alloy bracket will crack...you could repair it yourself if you know what you are doing...but I don't recommend it if you are not a moderately experienced mechanic. Too many small wires that are important on that column.

Thanks for the replies, it is in shop being fixed, $500.00 later. Atleast it wasn't the whole column. They told me at the dealership someone just had the column replaced and it cost over a thousand bucks. Of course that is dealer price.

Yeah...1106 is the list cost for the column by itself from GM...I got a used one with key if anyone needs one.
