hi all,

I recently bought a 2004 accent GL (2 door) and have some questions,

1. I am getting about 24-25MPG per tank, is this acceptable??

2. what is overdrive? What does it do and should I leave it on? Does it burn more gas??

3. What type of gas should I put in? I want the engine to last longer, i understand putting expensive gas in wont get better performance, i just want the car to last long and trouble free.

4. Can I use Mobil 1 synthetic oil with a Mobil 1 Synthetic oil filter for oil change? Or do you think Accent do not need good care like that?? What do you use for oil chagne?

Thanks,
Tak

1. It all depends if it is city or highway driving. The window sticker will tell you what the car should get under each condition.

2. Overdrive is a lower gear to help with gas mileage. If you have a 5spd, the 5th gear is overdrive, in the auto, 4th gear is overdrive. It does not burn more gas, it burns less, unless you are trying to accelerate in 5th gear. It really reduces the torque and you will burn more gas trying to accelerate in 5th because the engine is working so hard to get going.

3. 87 octane is recommended for the cars. You could go up to 89, but in that kind of car, it really won't make a difference for performance on longevity by putting better gas in it. One thing I wouldn't do though, is get cheap gas from a Kroger, Meijer. I'd stick with Shell or BP or another higher quality gasoline. We had an '03 Tiburon in here for almost a month trying to figure out what was wrong with it. Upon startup in the cold, it would misfire and die, 2nd attempt it would be fine. Replaced all kinds of parts on it and it still did it. Finally sucked about half a gallon out of the tank and there was all kinds of shit in it. Customer always goes to Kroger to get his gas. He won't be going there anymore.

4. You can use Mobil 1, but it isn't necessary. Synthetic oil lubricates better, but is a thinner oil, so there is a lot less resistance. In high compression high horsepower motors, synthetic oil can get you sometimes another 10-15hp. This only in motors that are already pushing 800-900 hp though. Sometimes gas mileage will increase also. I have an '02 Eclipse GT, 5spd, I purchased new. I took 2 trips from Indianapolis to Connecticut within a couple months of each other. 1st trip was at about 5k miles, using Valvoline 5w30, non synthetic, got 30mpg. 2nd trip was at about 12kmiles, on Mobil 1, 5w30, and got 33mpg. Synthetic can also cause the car to spring leaks. Being your car is new, this shouldn't happen. I had an older civic that I tried using synthetic in. Motor was bone dry, but after my first oil change with synthetic I had leaks from valve cover gasket, oil pan, and rear main seal. Once they start, they don't go away, so switching back to a non synthetic didn't fix it. It's completely up to you, probably won't make a difference either way in that car.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply.

1. I notice the engine noise for the Accent is pretty loud, is there anything I can do on my end to make it NOT as loud?

2. So, if I am just going to use regular motor oil, what grade should I use? I heard newer cars should use 5W30, for accent, is that true?

thanks,
tak

the noise in the accent is just the injectors, they are stupid loud. And you should use 5w30 it is your best all-round oil.
