so my car went into the shop today to have the clutch fixed.

and what did i find out?

that the frame is beyond rusty and will take at least $3000 to repair.

i had 5 guys check out this car with me, CREDIBLE guys too, and yet we somehow didn't catch the rust.

the car is not road-worthy, will not certify, and will take alot of money to restore.

so now i'm forced to either sell it or part it out to make ends meet. i doubt i'll make any money from it, and i'm pissed beyond words. the car was sold to me as is, but the jack-ass who sold it to me didn't mention the leaky gas-tank, or the frame rust, and i bet he knew about the clutch before he sold it to me.

i have therefore come to the conclusion that, when it comes to cars, God hates me. i have had no luck with any cars i've owned.

i'll be looking for another one soon.

But poker is luck of the deal so thats a bad analogy. you make me want to get mine checked out now ......ill probably be in your boat then....sheesh now u got me worried lol.

never blame GOD...

sorry brian, but since 5 credible guys checked out your frame, why does 1 persons opinion change that?

check it out yourself dude, jack the car up or get some ramps.

dude, youll never find a perfect s13, so since GOD gave you lemons, make some lemonade.

leaky gas tank? go to the dealer and get a new one.

rusty frame? at least its not bent-up, go get some tanabe ladder bars

f'ed up clutch? time to get an act upgrade!

c'mon brian, frames dont last forever.

seat time is seat time. practie makes perfect, and your s13 is (imho) way cooler than your m30.

the "one person" you refer to is a friend who also happens to be a class-A mechanic. he's the one who looked at the car today. he also happens to have a hydraulic hoist, which is where we lifted the car, got under it, and discovered all the rust.

trust me dude. tanabe ladder bars will not save this one.

i dunno about the US, but there's a thing in Ontario where your car has to be safety certified in order for you to get a license plate for it and in order for it to be legal to drive on roads.. my car WILL NOT pass in it's current state, and doing a cheap job of fixing it (ie bondo, welding etc.) will not help it at all. the class-A mechanic who checked out my car also happens to be licensed to do these safety checks, so he would know. the car is not roadworthy, and would take a complete tear-down and frame-rebuild in order for it to have any semblance of hope for being road-worthy again.

believe me. getting under there today, it was like the first time. i had never seen any of this rust before, and i'm not blaming him. he's right. it is trash and will not pass. but that doesn't mean i'm not still mad.

i've had no luck in finding or buying cars...every one i buy, no matter how thoroughly i check it out or get second opinions, something ALWAYS happens that fucks it up...

and this isn't the only shitty thing that's happened this week. i have no job or money, my classes this semester are shit, the teachers are assholes, my friends have all left, my dad is mad at me, and all week me and my girlfriend have been fighting on and off over the smallest, stupidest things. like today, when i drove her home, i had just found out about my car and was mad as hell (i think i broke my pinky when i punched a cabinet). when i'm as mad as i was today, i like to be alone. if i'm with people, the smallest thing can and will set me off, and i don't want to snap at people. so i told her i'd like to be alone after school and we could hang out later. she got all mad and stormed away, and now her mom just called my house looking for her. so i have no idea whether my girlfriend is mad at me or not, and to top that all off, i'm worried as hell because neither me nor her family knows where she is.

life truly does suck.

i'm not looking for a perfect S13. by no means. every one has it's own personal problems. but this car isn't even CLOSE to perfect. the frame is total shit. besides that, the car is perfect, but that is enough to totally cancel out the rest of the car.

i just want one that will run, pass safety, and do me good. if this car had a good frame, i could've handled all the little quibbles with it, like the gas-tank and window motor, but since the frame is gone, the car is dead.

i'm parting it out or selling it whole to someone who's willing to put alot of work into it.

Stay with 'er (the car) man... you obviously like the s13 and it'll be easier to wait and re-frame it than to get a new one.

Hmm yea I know heavy cars aren't good for drifting, but how do Lexus sc300's drift then?? I see a lot of SC300's in those japanese drifting videos, my bro's SC400 weighs 3700 lbs and it's bone stock.

Anyways sorry to take it off-subject, but you got to respect the good times in life, as well as the bad. Everyone hits a low-point, all you go to do is pull through and think to yourself that down the line this will all be over and that it wasn't that big of a deal. first of all, not to be a dick but you have said many times that you should keep personal issues personal, sharing what happened bad to you all week isn't following that, if your gonna be a mod and inforce rules atleast follow them please

second, sucks to hear about your car man, but it happens to the best of us. I got my rx-7 and in 2 months the clutch went out, I ordered a new one, it got back ordered, I get it finally after 2 weeks of no car, then I plan on putting it in and we get a freaking ice storm(garage is full and I have to do all work in the driveway, not happening) so I wait all week cuz they say the next weekend will be sunny and in the upper 40's so it is livable working conditions, well turns out we get like 3 inches of snow followed by another 5 inches on sunday night, so I finally broke down and payed someone to put it in after 3 1/2 weeks with no car, yea it sucked I got a new car, drove it 2 months, then looked at it in the garage for a month. so it wasn't $3000 but you found your car way cheaper than mine so don't get down, I can tell you that once you upgrade anything thats wrong you'll be glad it was broke and you got somethign better, I know I am :) hope that helps get you through the day haha

Brian

Sorry about your car man...I'm actually looking for an S13 right now... Is the frame rust actually dangerous to drive the car? Did the mechanic tell you how long it would last until it gave out? How much do you wanna sell it for? I live in Socal though..transportation might be a bitch.

Me and my friends have a saying that takes care of girls if you live by it. "G's up, Ho'z down." Learn it, live it, love it. It does seem that you are cursed, but while your odds of getting a shitty car remains the same, the chances fall dramatically. You just gotta look at it like since you have had such terrible luck in the past, it's bound to change for the better anytime soon.

Rust is just one more thing to add to your checklist when you get your next 240. Which will probly be soon, don't sweat it.

Dude you gotta be patient. I know I know it seemed like a great buy, but you rushed into it too fast. This one was decieving thoguh. The road salt was proabably the final straw at killing an already weak frame.

Next time just get Everett to check the car out. Im not tryin to lecture, Im just tryin to help you avoid another episode like this and the M30.

Wait till you sell the van, and buy a nice clean 1991-1993 with LSD. Sure it will cost more and you wont be able to upgrade right away, but in the end you will come out ahead.

Soon, all these cars will rot, and the prices will skyrocket due to that and the drifting fad(i call it hachi roku syndrome). You gotta pay to play man, just buckle down and go with the flow. Marco's car took 8 years to build, and he's the top drifter in Canada now. The road to victory is a long slow process, but you will come ontop in the end. Ill be there to help you every step of the way.

Soyo
02-05-2004, 09:07 PM
don't sell it man, fix it, the car is rare you should be happy to have it even if it has its trouble spots, when something breaks that just means you need an upgrade, thats my thinking atleast... I say dang a new clutch is expensive, but mine goes out and I'm like, well stage 1 clutch isn't that much more than normal, and chances are it wont go out as easy, so I got that, now you gotta say, man this sucks its gonna cost a ton of money, but I'm gonna put in the extra bones to keep it from happening again...

its like buying tools, you can buy walmart brand for lets say $10 or go to sears and get craftsman for $20, sure the walmart brand is half price, but you know its gonna break, and the craftsman wont, and if it does, walla lifetime warranty... screw money, its not important, go for quality, you'll be glad you did.

publicenemy137
02-05-2004, 10:14 PM
I'd say sell ur parts, cut your losses, and get a better 240sx when you get more money. It seems it has a lot or probs, and it's costly to fix all of em, there's no guarantee that something else may go wrong.

Get an s14, I heard they have less probs and so far mine is holding up really well. Keep your head up bro, you'll get another 240sx in the future, maybe when this whole "240 craze" dies down and the demand is down, you'll get another one for a great price.

Soyo
02-05-2004, 11:28 PM
yea right its not gonna go down for a long time... recently we've been getting people in the rx-7 board that are like "hey I want a drift car, how can I build an rx-7 and do this or that so that it will be gay?!?!" ok so I added the gay part but you get the point, its getting worse before it gets better, keep your car, just think how long it took to find the current 240 you have, now think how many more idiots have bought them since then? yea I'd say keep the fix'er up'er :)

Fliquer
02-06-2004, 02:13 AM
Its a shame. Hope everything else works out for you.

That said, now Im paranoid about frame rust :uhoh: . I wonder if a NC inspector would have noticed something like that...just had it inspected 3 months ago.

enecks
02-06-2004, 01:24 PM
Fliquer: we don't really have to worry so much about rust down here. Northern cars are more susceptible to rust because they're much more exposed to snow/salt. We get snow maybe once or twice a year, and I think we have one or two salt trucks in the state. So unless you bought your car from somebody who lived in upstate New York or Minnesota or any other snowbound yankee enclave, your car should be ok.

And Brian, I'm sure you're tired of hearing this, but be patient. I think your bad luck is probably building up some good car karma. Or carma, if you will. So hang in there. The right one will come along, and all will fall into place.

DONT BUILD A 200ZR its not worth it in the long run. Work with the stock turbo engine, i am boosting 14psi and its so fun, i just welded on a bov . THE only car i would trade it for is a Z31 anniversary .
The Z31 is week in the knees but an anti sway bar and stiffer springs it could be a better drift car.

And about the rust, i know how you feel ,a year ago i bought a Subaru Legacy Turbo wagon (wanted to build a sleeper, :( , i know its stupid) and i went to change the breaks and discovered the WHOLE underside was rusted over. Looks like it was sitting in salt water.

let's keep it on topic.

thanks for all your support so far guys. this has been very trying for me, but i think parting it out is the way to go. i'm going to be keeping the front lip and the driver's seat (no tears) for my next car. i think it should at least make me my money back, if not give me a bit of profit.
