Mod IdeasMStout 01-30-2004, 01:47 PM I have a 95 SOHC Sport, and Im planning to buy some shit for it to make it faster of course. I just wanted to know if my list of ideas was good. Dynomax Catback, some sort of Cold Air Intake, MSD Coil, MSD or Magnecor Plug wires, and Denso Iridium plugs. For the price of those plugs, I would hope they do something worth buying them for. I might also get a better computer if I have the money and if its worth it. So give me the lowdown and your opinions (hopefully true) on this. Thanks. Scatch! 01-30-2004, 07:44 PM First, don't get "some sort of CAI", get a good one like an Iceman. Come to think of it, that's about the best one for G1. Second, don't bother with a coil unless yours is toast or you plan on doing some serious mods. The stock coil plack is plenty of juice for up to at least 200hp. (more money for new computer :) ) Lastly, do some research of iridium plugs in Neons. As you may know, platinum plugs do not last in the Neon. So you might want to see how the iridium holds up before you plunk down all that cash for plugs MStout 02-02-2004, 07:22 PM Thats the exact CAI I was gonna get but I dont see the big difference between them. Theres nothing but stats proving to me that its better. Would the MSD coil with the wires be better though? Im sure it should make a smoother spark and idle and give me better gas mileage too. If it gave more power too its worth it. Scatch! 02-02-2004, 11:47 PM Theres nothing but stats proving to me that its better. Well, what do you want? Stats are the only thing companies have to show that they are better, so it stands to reason that stats are what they'd use. AEM has changed their design like three times, so there's no telling what you might get. Kirk is a good pipe, but it seems like more a pain to install than the Iceman. The only problem I've seen with the Iceman is that they started to use cheap filters. I think they addressed that problem, but I'm not sure. I really doubt that you'd see any difference in acceleration (the only difference that counts) with an MSD coil on an otherwise stock motor. NeonStyl 02-03-2004, 03:27 AM I have to agree with Scatch in going with a Iceman intake on a first gen neon. However, if you don't want to spend the cash for a Iceman CAI... do some research on www.neonspeed.com and other neon boards for what is known as the "3.0 intake" mod. The 3.0 is a relatively cheap DIY CAI that has shown similar gains to an Iceman. Also, I have a MSD Coil and MSD 8.5mm wires on my '98 SOHC and felt absolutely NO power gain after installing them. The only reason I have them is because my factory wires and coil were shot :( . L8R, Scatch! 02-03-2004, 03:47 AM I put a link here: http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=180036 on that homemade CAI if you want. P.S. Neonspeed... I haven't check out that site in ages. It's grow'd up so much! :D Is that your site, NeonStyl? dnkygirl 02-03-2004, 08:55 AM I added the iceman first... really didn't notice anything different. I then did the under drive pulley and got a new exhaust manifold... pacesetter. That's when i noticed a big difference. I have an atx and getting up onto the freeway use to be a big issue for me, but now... no problems at all... dnkygirl 98JADENEON 02-03-2004, 11:30 AM i would say do the iceman, then 52 or 55mm t/b( i have AF/X 55mm) good cat back(i have flowmaster and it is great). the modern performance has an underdrive pulley for $100(good buy). after that header. with all that you should be in the 14's without a problem. NeonStyl 02-03-2004, 07:34 PM P.S. Neonspeed... I haven't check out that site in ages. It's grow'd up so much! :D Is that your site, NeonStyl? No, Neonspeed.com (http://www.neonspeed.com) is not my site, but I am an Administrator there. Not to get off topic here, but yea... we have made quite a few changes for the better & the site has "grown up" so to speak. Back on topic tho, I agree with dnkygirl on the exhaust... especially since the original poster (MStout) has a SOHC and SOHC's are known for their notoriously constrictive factory exhausts :( . For those interested, there is a "Noob's Guide" to N/A Go Fast modifications here (http://www.neonspeed.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=798) . L8R, MStout 02-04-2004, 06:09 PM Thanks for all the info...I wont buy the coil then. Only thing it would do I guess is fancy up my engine and stuff. But I knew my car should run 14s and I told my friend it would and she said I was bullshit. Her uncle has a '00 Mustang with nitro and he only runs 16s...and thats pretty shitty. I really dont understand it. Unless she was confused and didnt say the right number or something. Scatch! 02-04-2004, 07:39 PM Or maybe her uncle couldn't drive his way out of a paper sack. ;) MStout 02-04-2004, 09:52 PM Probably...I just remembered a mod I didnt list. Are aftermarket injectors a good investment? I was also wondering how one goes about porting and polishing the engine. Im assuming you take off the headers and all that and clean it out, to put it in a basic way. Im just kinda wondering what other fancy things are done to make it such a good "mod" and HP gain. NeonStyl 02-05-2004, 12:06 AM New aftermarket injectors are no where needed until you get further down the line on modifications where the car begins to require it. However, when you do get to that point... Deyeme Racing (http://www.deyemeracing.com) has some nice injectors for first-gen Neons. Look at the link I posted in my above post on "N/A Modifications" for a good list of things to get your started going faster :) . L8R, vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
