96 Neon, Elec Cooling Fan Relayrunningmole 01-30-2004, 12:43 AM My friend has a 96 Neon, 2.0 SOHC, auto. One of his cooling fans (the one on the driver side) does not shut off when the car is turned off, even after the key is removed. I'm just wonderin where the relay is for that fan, or if they run off of the same one. Going to unplug it and see if the fan turns off. Any other suggestions on what we can do....other possibilities incase it's not the relay. Thanks Matt pegasus757 01-30-2004, 10:53 PM Matt, next to the battery (follow the red cable ) is a black plastic box , open the box and you will see the radiator relay along with others . Swap out the horn relay with the rad relay and see if the horn sounds if it does then the relay is stuck closed . if so replace relay. if the horn does not sound then leave the relays in the swaped position to test for a few days. There is a 30 amp fuse that is hot all the time waiting to let current flow thru the relay, the only time current should flow is when the car gets hot and tells the pcm to run the fan. .....The fans will also come on when the ac or defrost is on . Now for the reason relays stick ......after a relay closes current turns the fan , when the relay just starts to open, it will arch... fan no longer draws current and as the motor is winding down it produces a small amount of electricty called back emf.. pitting the contacts in the relay even more. hope this helps PS had to edit.... if the fan keeps runing after you swap relays diconnect the coolant sensor ,it maybe shorted to ground telling the pcm the engine is hot when its not runningmole 01-31-2004, 01:52 PM Awesome, thanks! We'll try that out today elkins0908 02-05-2004, 01:36 AM Concerning the fan relay... My neon (98' 2.0 DOHC) doesn't have a relay in the box by the battery- is there a physical relay that can be checked and replaced or is it internal in the computer?? I have been running mine manually by installation of a switch, I'd like to have it back to normal. Also, is there a benefit to disconnecting the AC compressor from the defrost mode on the blower?? NeonStyl 02-05-2004, 06:57 AM For those that don't have the fan relay in the PDC (fuse box under the hood), there is a inline relay for the fans mounted to the driver-side wall of the engine bay. You will most likely have to remove the battery & battery tray to see it / access it. This is a no ordinary Bosch -style relay tho, as far as I know it is a dealer-only part and a new one would have to be ordered from a local dealership if needed. L8R, pegasus757 02-05-2004, 01:08 PM is there a benefit to disconnecting the AC compressor from the defrost mode on the blower? well thats a matter up to you ...with it disconnected you save wear and tear on compressor and fuel, but then the a/c system will not lube the seals . As far as does the pcm control the fan ..yes. there are two parts to a relay the controlling side and the load side. the load side is normally a device that draws high current (fan ,fog lights, ect).the temp sensor tells the pcm its.. TIME.. to turn on the fan,.... the pcm tells the fan relay to turn on the fan (by providing a ground to the control side of relay)the contacts close and the fan runs. Your car may have a solid state relay..i think that is what neonstyl is talking about elkins0908 02-05-2004, 01:14 PM solid-state relay= expensive!, does anyone know of a re-call on this? I saw somewhere that they issued a recall on the relay, my local dealership didn't have anything on it. elkins0908 02-05-2004, 01:24 PM Once removed, ..does anyone know how to test the solid-state relay? NeonStyl 02-06-2004, 04:48 AM List of TSB's (Technical Service Bulletin's... i.e. recalls) for the neon here (http://www.neons.org/neontsb/index.shtml).
