I need help, plain and simple. I am trying to install a very simple and straight forward remote started on a 2003 GMC Sierra 1500. The truck is basic with power locks and crank windows, no keyless entry. I am a trained and qualified technician and I spend many hours wiring assorted electronics into vehicles, this is my first remote starter. I have the starter installed and the lock/unlock works fine and the unit will turn everything on and crank the truck. The truck will start and instantly shut off and I get the security icon on the dash. This is where my problem is. I bought yet another item to bypass the theft system. I have studied indepth the difference betwween Passlock I, Passlock II, Passkey, and V.A.T.S. The unit I purchased is a manual type in that you have to measure the R-value of the system and then dial in the unit with a hard pot to match the value. The book that came with the unit said to look for 3 wires for Passlock I and II and to look for a small orange or black tube with 2 small wires inside for Passkey and VATS. OK, now, the key for the truck does not have a pellet embedded into it so it is not Passkey right? It has the orange tube with 2 small white wires in it so its not Passlock I or II, right? I really need help, everything I look at says that this vehicle comes with Passlock II but physically it looks to be set up for Passkey without the right key. I am frustrated as this has been going on close to 2 weeks now and everytime I think I am making progress, I regress even more. So I am pleading with anyone out there who has any experience with these units or has successfully bypassed this system to please respond. It would be greatly appreciated and would let me finally get a good nights sleep.
Thanks to all in advance.
Joey

1st, I recomend you send back that bypass you bought. That is the old school approach and doesn't work very well. I would get one like Directed Electronic's 555L that self learns. Reason? Your key will change in value over time. The 555L will relearn each and every time you start the truck with the key. The other bypass will not and eventually will fail.

2nd, your truck has PasslockII. There's no doubt. I have done atleast 20 of them recently. You can take off the shroud on the column and see the tiny wires that go into the cyl. lock. The will be close to the area you put the key in. No, they are not in any sort of tube. The ones you saw are airbag wires.

3rd, how did you get the locks and alarm to work??? DEI has another part that is one wire hook up that arms/disarms, driver's unlock 1st, unlock all, and domelight. It works extremely well.

Thank You so very much for the info. Sounds like I got the wrong equipment to begin with. I will see if I can locate the wiring on the column before I do anything else, I am almost out of hair...lol.

No problem. GM cars seem to be my specialty around here. Hmmm, must be because one of their factories is nearby???

A guy called Murph at this forum (http://forum.sounddomain.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=forum;f=9)
seems to know just about all there is about alarms and remote start. He answers pretty quicklt also.
